Re: Alabama 2018-2019

Does anyone have predictions for next year's circuits? I've gotta say, Liberty is impressive, but they'll probably have a tough fight against Kapil and his squad. In addition to Liberty and Hoover, there'll likely be a team that comes out of nowhere, similarly to Walter Zhang. As for LAMP, although ...

Re: Alabama 2018-2019

Congratulations to Liberty's 2018-2019 team for placing 4th at MSNCT, which I believe was the deepest run of any Alabama team at any national tournament. They went 6-2 in the prelim rounds on Saturday and went undefeated during the morning playoff rounds. I hope you guys continue to excel in the nex...

Re: MSNCT predictions

I can attest to the fact that Liberty is nationally contending, as a fellow Alabamian who has played Liberty multiple times. All 3 of the major categories (Literature, History, and Science) are specialized to at least HS Regs level, and will definitely benefit them this year at MSNCT as other teams ...

Re: 2019 NHBB Discord Tournament

Ameya, have you realized that none of the other writers want you to host another tournament on our set? Don't try and run the set for another one of your discord tournaments.

Re: Alabama 2018-2019

According to the ASCA MS Rules , The moderator shall not read the correct answers. At the LAMP Fun Tournament last month, there was a particular worksheet where the question was looking for Black Thursday, as in the beginning of the Great Depression. However, the answer was listed as Black Friday. I...

Re: Alabama 2018-2019

Currently , Liberty is definitely the best middle school team in AL. At today's Decatur Middle School tournament, Liberty finished prelims with ~550 ppg, and the closest competitor was Baldwin with ~440 ppg. Liberty continued to sweep the playoffs and got 1st, even without Ethan Xu, one of their co...

What about LAMP? LAMP has two strong sophomores, Ani Harishankar and Jenny Baek, specializing in history and literature respectively.

Re: Alabama 2018-2019

Short answer: Worksheets are the remnants of the old format ASCA used years ago. We voted to eliminate them from the JV/HS level last year, but left them in place in Middle at the request of a plurality of polled coaches. Although they are not good quizbowl as defined within the context of the quiz...

Re: Player tossup etiquette

Well, if it was possible for them to have a comeback at a very close match and I wasn't stalling by deferring, would this be considered bad etiquette?

Re: Player tossup etiquette

On a similar topic, is bonus stalling allowed?
As in, waiting to answer the bonus until asked by the moderator to prevent a comeback from the other team.

Re: The State of Good Quizbowl, State-by-State

I'm glad to see Alabama given such a high rating. I agree with nearly all of it. As you go further down, it gets harder to find to find schools participating. South of Birmingham and Montgomery, I can't think of any schools who participate, except for Baldwin. For middle school, there was basically...

Re: Expa

Jumping back to the content of the post, as a former middle school lit player, I think you may be underestimating the amount of lit questions there are in a game. The NAQT MS lit distribution contains roughly 3.9 llt per packet. If you stick with humanities and do all of the lit distribution as wel...

Re: Lit Distribution

In my experience, Young Reader literature gets to the giveaway much more often than other literature, and it's part of the reason why the cliff from MS to HS is so difficult. To have such a major part of MS lit just disappear when we get to HS is just crazy. We're only exposed to about 100-200 answe...

Lit Distribution

After looking at distribution for the MSNCT and HSNCT Distribution , it seems that the MSNCT Literature distribution is very skewed compared to HSNCT. With ~3.9 Lit tossups per packet for MS, 0.7 of those tossups per packet are actually Mythology/Religion. Also, considering that there is 1 Young Rea...

MSNCT flights

Hi, I will be attending the MSNCT and was wondering if my flight gives me ample time to finish the tournament. My departure time is 5:50 PM at O'Hare, and I'd like to get there an hour earlier at 4:50. Transit takes about 20 minutes, so that means I'll have to leave the tournament at 4:30. Is that e...

Re: Alabama 2017-2018

Okay, I do kinda understand your points. I was just kinda put off that none of hours I put into studying literature really helped in the tournament. I don't know if it was just me, but I did also feel that current events distribution was different.

Re: Alabama 2017-2018

What did you guys think about the packet used at the ASCA Middle School State Championship? Honestly, I felt it was not up to the standards of NAQT, without getting into specifics, or I could just be biased because I didn't make allstate or go to playoffs. I did feel there was odd question distribut...
