Putting Book Titles in Bodies of Questions

I just wanted to get everyone's opinions on this topic. Putting book titles before descriptions of plot, character names and facts about the author does not necessarily betray the principle of pyramidality, as many book titles are more obscure and less well known. For example, it is indisputable tha...

Re: 2018-19 Groger Ranks Awards

After playing with William Groger, I can confirm that he is more than able to consistently lead a team on both bonuses and tossups against high level competition on difficult questions. The shadow effect on Miami Valley is huge and it shouldn’t distract from William’s position as one of the top soph...

Re: Help studying

How flashcards are structured really depends on the subject and the answer line you're trying to get at. Literature: If I wanted to make flashcards on One Hundred Years of Solitude, I would make one flashcard that says "One Hundred Years of Solitude is by" "Garcia Marquez (Colombia)&q...

Podcasts for Learning Quiz Bowl

Are there any good podcasts for learning quiz bowl out there that people can recommend? I'd be especially interested in history, but anything you guys can suggest would be great. Thanks!

Re: How to set up next year’s team for success

studying, not just studying but studying correctly, What does this mean? Well it might not be as much of an issue with teams that are well established and such, but a lot of kids on my team seemed to think you could just learn the names of books and the authors, and that would do it, or that they c...

Re: How to set up next year’s team for success

This happened last year with our team, and imo the best thing you can do is pass on good studying techniques and a good work ethic. Try to make sure that the sophomores are studying, not just studying but studying correctly, and talk to them about how they can be their best. If you want to, you can ...

Re: How Much Do You Study?

I usually take 45 minutes to go through my flashcards for the day, then I make flashcards for 30 minutes to an hour, so like 1-2 hours a day.

What is the Best Way to Tell How Good a Player Actually Is?

Looking at a lot of tournaments recently, I became interested in player rankings. I noticed that, much like points per game in basketball, points per game isn't always the best indicator of the best players. It is hard to know when a player is just the best player on a bad team, instead of just the ...

Re: ACE: Is it Legit?

I went over the summer, and I think it was a positive experience. It's definitely not for super advanced players, but rather for players who want to make the jump to elite, or just good, but aren't really sure how. The questions are pyramidal, quality, and cover the quiz bowl canon pretty well. I th...

Re: How Do/Did you Study?

if you have lots and lots of cards try using specialized flashcard software (see: anki, mnemosyne). they use cool formulas to help you retain information and you don't need to have an internet connection This. I use Anki religiously (I've got well over 2000 cards I study using it). It helps you ret...

How Do/Did you Study?

I've been wondering this a lot recently, how do people in quiz bowl study? I'm mostly talking outside of practice, but if there are some interesting things you guys do in practice that's fine too! The way I study is mainly through Quizlet. For literature, I am working my way down through the frequen...

Re: How to Improve as a Question Writer?

- I'm sure people on the forums would love to give advice, if you're OK with them seeing your questions! (We even used to have a thread for this at some point, but it might have died.) I would definitely be willing to give my questions to others to read! I saw that thread you're talking about, but ...

How to Improve as a Question Writer?

Hi friends, I'm an aspiring question writer and my questions are probably terrible. However, not being in a especially active Quiz Bowl community, I don't really have anyone to give me advice on my questions. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get some good feedback on my questions, and p...
