Re: Where are you going next year? (Collegiate 2023)

In June, I'm moving to Minneapolis for a job in student affairs at the University of Minnesota Law School. My playing days are still pretty much over aside from ACRONYM every year, but once I get settled in I am looking forward to joining the Minnesota quizbowl mafia.

Re: 2021 ACF Nationals Qualifier

I mentioned this in the staffers' chat yesterday but I do want to say it publicly: Ganon was the very model of what an outstanding TD should be while running this tournament under the non-ideal circumstances we've all been dealing with for the past year. He responded to issues quickly and confidentl...

Where Are You Going Next Year? (Collegiate 2021)

To quote all the previous threads on this topic: It's that time of year again where people start to hear back from transfer applications, grad school apps, job offers, landlords, etc. and make plans to go places. Here is a thread in which current college players or members of the college quizbowl co...

Re: Alabama 2020-2021 Discussion Thread

If I may be totally frank, if any Alabaman watches this video of Crimson Tide fans celebrating the championship last night and (knowing what we know about how the virus spreads in large maskless crowds and can take as long as two weeks to show symptoms) thinks that it’s acceptable to be holding in-p...

Re: INTRODUCING THE AMERICAN QUIZBOWL LEAGUE

I want to preface this post with a disclaimer that nothing in here is intended to attack Joe or AQBL (or anyone else associated with AQBL, either named or anonymous). I do not doubt their passion for quizbowl and their belief that they are doing a good thing by trying to start a new centralized orga...

Re: On HS Teams Without Coaches

For what it's worth Basil's team also has an official adult coach. I guess it's worth asking: Has anyone ever filed a complaint with that person? It's also worth noting that the official coach was not involved at most tournaments they attended. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Basil's also graduated from...

Re: Y'all need to pay attention to your own community

Like I said in my first post, I am seeing no introspection, and honestly, I don’t think I ever will. I respectfully disagree that I haven’t seen any introspection on the men’s part, because I would consider the discussion of how the discourse makes them feel to be introspection in its own way. But ...

Men of Quizbowl, We Should Talk.

So. Men of quizbowl. Let’s talk about the misogyny (and other gender-based misconduct) problem in the community, again. I am furious that we clearly need to continually have these conversations, but I’m going to try and be as levelheaded as possible. I’m not going to yell at you, and I’m not going t...

Re: Directing bonus answers in Discord tournaments

When I was moderating WORKSHOP Online, both open and closed, I requested that players confer in voice if they were able and then type their answers (or if they were conferring in chat, to say "DIRECTED: [answer]" or write it in all-caps. Some of them did, some of them were voice-chatting i...

I really enjoyed this set and many thanks to Will & everyone for their hard work on it. A few small things I noticed: 1) TU 6, round 1 (dogs in lit): you clue The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and refer to Christopher as "socially awkward." He has autism. I don't know i...

Alex, I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit for your role in the revitalization of the team. Re: The 2018 Quizbowl Oscar Pool

It's a movie about a person who tries to ditch the suburbs for the glamor of city life. I guess that's just the Ur-Myth of "caveman leaves cave," but I think it's done in Lady Bird in a way that resonates with trying to make it big in LA. (Maybe La La Land is just still on my mind, and I'...
