Re: 2021 NASAT will be online - preliminary announcement
Question about this. In the case that tournaments can be held safely again over the summer and into the Fall of 2021, will this be available for potential in-person mirrors? I know a few open sites usually mirror this in summer.

Re: Oxford Open Online Mirror - Saturday 27th June
Thank you a lot to the friends overseas for staying up till the wee hours of the morning hosting this to entertain some Americans wanting to play quizbowl. I generally thought the set was delightful to play (I think there is some sort of expectation you have to have going in with a British set, if y...

It didn't say in the initial announcement but I presume this tournament is not open. Will this tournament have an open playtest mirror over the Discord or Zoom?

Re: Miscellaneous Distribution and Community
I heartily endorse Ganon's post; I don't have much to add because I think it pretty comprehensively lays out the systemic issues with quizbowl pop culture writing. It's really quite clear what kind of people make up most quizbowl writing corps when players have to sit through the umpteenth question...

I'm not playing this tournament, but in regards to Americanization: -I don't really think Americanized versions of CamO have worked out that well in years past. -In many cases, it's not really that the questions are "too British" but that they (by "they," I mean the offending qu...

Re: Summer Events?
With CO cancelled this year, it's looking pretty likely there won't be any in-person summer events. That's a long time without quizbowl. Most online open tournaments since the lockdown have largely been late mirrors of tournaments that already happened to some capacity in person. Unless I'm missing...

A few announcements to make: 1. This tournament is going to happen, in-person, on either the proposed original date or a delayed date. 2. We will make a decision on whether to reschedule this tournament by 11:59 PM on May 9th at the absolute latest, as additional information about the COVID-19 situ...

I dunno if you will be at ACF Nationals (Likely In July or August via the new date) but that's probably a place it can be done (I think they ran SHAWARMA at the ACF Nats hotel last year)? CO weekend might probably be the best bet at this point then, though obviously folks have discussed in here that...

Re: 2020 ACF Regionals Thanks and General Discussion
I have a lot of thoughts on how quizbowl handles popular culture in general that I am not going to delve too deeply into here, especially considering that there was 5/5 total popular culture in this whole set. My main view is that, oftentimes, non-NAQT quizbowl popular culture is much too reflectiv...

Re: 2020 ACF Regionals Thanks and General Discussion
I staffed this tournament at the University of Florida site and it seemed as though most players were fine with what they were hearing. I thought the set was good, and probably the absolute hardest Regionals should be without going into Nationals level. I was a very big fan of the “Other” subjects (...

This will be my 2nd CO and I want to have some fun. I'll get the team probably 2-3 good buzzes a round as well as 1 hilarious wrong answer. I'm pretty serviceable at history for this level as well as the Other Academic and Modern World categories.

Hey Eric,
We are getting a bunch of UCF and former UCF people finalized for teams. Would you be opposed to having Super ACRONYM on Sunday, or is everything already planned out?

Re: CO 2019 Discussion
I’ll concede it’s completely reasonable to ask, and that it probably is an easy part. It’s going to have to be when the set is posted that I remember some of the harder lit things, as the Darwish and Anaya things were just the first bonus sets that came to mind. Ultimately, I think it’s me being una...

The only criticism is that the lit bonuses seemed much more difficult than any other subject (to be fair we did not have a lit player, but even at this difficult level we all have pretty much a basic knowledge of author’s names or main characters). My teammates have commented on the music and my kn...

I enjoyed playing my first CO, and the fact that it was this one (and with such incredible teammates). This is probably of t...

I’m sort of surprised the open consumption of alcohol during a side event at a high school national, in front of high schoolers, wasn’t shot down more or directly addressed before Lauren’s post (Maybe it was, just that people seem to find hypotheticals or what-ifs for a situation that shouldn’t have...

The history was also good, although I thought there were a few issues with balance between different topics. I found there were too many tossups that focused extensively on French kings in the Middle Ages and Renaissance in this tournament; 3 strikes me as excessive. In the packets I played, I don'...

I want to add on to the praise given to the tournament. Re: 2019 ACF Regionals Thanks and General Discussion
I read this set at the UCF site and the competitors seemed to mostly enjoy it. The only two things that bothered me was that this year’s regionals set was a little more difficult than last year’s (though that’s just me and maybe this was the goal) and that there were a lot of very easy/hard/very har...

I moderated yesterday at the UCF site (a slightly overall weaker field than most other sites besides 2-3 teams i'd imagine), and thought this set played incredibly well for newer players and experienced alike. I read at Nationals both days for 4th bracket teams. It looks like only two teams got belo...

I used to be of the line of thinking that ACF should have powers, mostly because it felt like a better reward of knowledge for knowing the so-called harder clues. The longer I played this game, the more I am sympathetic to the editors and the hard work they put in, and adding in powers really is a h...
