Re: Virginia Spring Tournament at UVA (Online) - February 27, 2021 [SATURNALIA Mirror for MD, VA, DC, WV]
This tournament happened! It went well, primarily due to our amazing staffers: Alana Dickey, Caleb Bales, Finn Arthur, Charlotte Goeb, Daniel Xue, Isabelle Maule, Nima Razavi, Lucia Mayor-Mora, and Yashu Tang. Huge thanks to all of them. Additional thanks to the creators of YellowFruit, Shawrisheets...

Re: FLopen 2020 Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Mirror at UVA (11/21)
This tournament went well. Thank you to everyone who signed up, especially to the people who helped us fill some open spots by signing up last-minute. Thanks to Alana Dickey, Mark Bailey, Daniel Xue, Caleb Bales, and myself for being amazing staffers. Thank you to Alana for doing the early parts of ...

Re: Cavalier Classic XXIII - 11/14 at UVA (Online)
Thank you to everyone for coming out to Cavalier Classic XXIII today. With zero prior tournament directing experience between us, we (Mark Bailey and I) worked super hard to prepare for and run this tournament. Thank you to all of the outside staffers who made hosting a tournament of this size possi...

Re: ACF Fall 2020 - Specific Question Discussion
Tossup 17 of packet A describes Federico García Lorca as a "Golden age author." Wikipedia describes the Golden Age as taking place from ~1492-1681. García Lorca was born in 1898. I originally clued Fuenteovejuna and Life Is a Dream as the first two sentences of this tossup, respectively, a...

Re: 2020 ACF Fall at UNC (10/17/2020)
Thanks to everyone involved in running this mirror and to ACF for writing a fun set! This was probably the most streamlined online tournament that I have played. I really appreciated the implementation of waiting rooms to facilitate transitions between rounds.

Statistics Questions
As someone who knows a lot more about statistics than pure math, but does not have any significant question-writing experience, I want to ask about statistics' role in higher-level quizbowl. I remember NAQT-written Scholastic Bowl questions containing a significant amount of prob/stats content at ar...

Re: QEMS2 Appears to be down
I too once tried to make a qems2 account, but the email verification link never worked for me. I had my verification message resent upon seeing this post, but the link still took me to a Chrome error page saying: "This site can't be reached." And yes, there is a "/" between "...

Re: Different Styles of Making Flashcards
I am by no means an elite player, but I have done quite a bit of studying over the years, and have never used nor seen the appeal of flashcards. I take bulleted pencil-and-paper notes on the harder details of everything I study, and I don't understand how flashcards could be more helpful for me. Is ...

Re: DC Metro Area Discussion - 2019-2020
Norfolk Academic Guild is a good team that returns almost all of their scoring. Although a freshman, Ean Casey has been playing this game for a long time and has the generalist’s ability to get tossups when tossups need to be gotten. He has some support in the Abney siblings. I don’t know much abou...

Re: NSC 2019 Set Discussion
This was my first NSC, and it was a super fun shift away from what I'm used to. The lit questions were the most fun I've ever played, and felt super rewarding. It was a great experience overall. Can I see the tossups on Everything that Rises Must Converge (it's my favorite short story) and The Prose...

Why is P/BB so variable?
Looking at the stats for the 2019 PACE NSC, I noticed that the P/BB (points per bounceback) statistic correlates very poorly with both overall placement and P/B (points per bonus). I understand that P/BB is a function of both the skill of the team and the skill of the teams they play against (playin...

Re: Making things stick.
Take organized, neat, bulleted, pencil-and-paper notes! Whenever I'm studying on the internet or from a nonfiction book, I take notes similarly to those that I would take in a history class. The act of writing things down manually is a great method for memorization, and full pages are great for skim...

I'm not a dedicated math player, but a surprising amount of the math questions that I do get are because of Numberphile videos.
