Re: TRASHionals 11 Discussion

I just want to compliment TRASH on a very well-run tournament. This was my 4th straight and the moderators were by far the best of any of the trashionals I've been to. I had no complaints about any of them. This was also my first year attending the welcoming party and I had a great time. Although th...

I thought it was a good set overall. Good difficulty. A few quibbles: There were way too many 5-10-20-30 bonuses. Either make every bonus that way or get rid of them. Each bonus should be formatted the same way to ensure fairness. There was a lot of Broadway questions this year. While I don't care o...

But for a few of the journal articles it links to you need a password to access. You could probably provide a few obscure facts for the first lines of a tossup but beyond that, I'm not sure of its effectiveness. If you access the articles through a campus library system you should have access to th...

Google Scholar has been beta for at least 2 years. I used it a lot for a big research paper I wrote in 2005. It basically searches Scholarly Journal databases like JSTOR, HeinOnline and the like. But for a few of the journal articles it links to you need a password to access. You could probably prov...

We never got complete stats from last year's TRASHIONALS (I think all we got last year was a listing of the top 8 teams and a long list of people's average score and that was it) so I never expected any stats this year. I don't understand how some tournaments can give live scoring while TRASH can ne...

I admit it was a very poorly written post. All I was trying to say is that TRASH needs to broaden their spectrum of topics. That's all. The NBA was the worst example. I was just trying to find something in the world of sports. Sorry for any confusion.

This sort of relates back to my original complaint. I don't think question writers should focus on stuff that is "good" or not. That's why there was too much indie music and not enough questions on bands that people hate but at least they have heard of them. It's trash for a reason. There ...

Just to add a little bit to the video game discussion. My team lamed or 0'd almost every video game bonus and only got 1 video game tossup but that was only because our video game guy missed the plane to BWI. If he was there, we would have got most of them. I think a 1/1 ratio is just fine but like ...

TRASHionals Discussion

Rather than merely quibbling over whether or not there were too many soccer and video games discussion, I'd instead like to focus on what I feel are the two biggest problems with TRASH. The first is not a new trend but it's that TRASH still skews towards those in the mid-30s. It would be one thing i...

I managed to get the Tito Ortiz tossup just because I am one of the few people who will admit to seeing Cradle in the Grave in theaters. This year's question set was definitely a lot better than last year's Regionals. And yeah, unless TRASHionals is in Saint Louis or someplace close to it, I plan on...

I'm leaving Tulsa for Saint Louis University. I don't plan on participating in any academic tournaments but I plan on staying active in TRASH (my TRASH alias is Jose Cuervo) for at least the next three years. I'm unsure as of yet if I'm going to stick with my old team, become a free agent, or start ...

The worst packet was the one with the 2 comedy central bonuses. That's fine for a trash packet but not an academic one. I've attended a lot of tournaments in my 4 years playing quiz bowl and have heard hundreds of packets, the aforementioned packet by far had the worst question I have ever heard. It...
