I think that a lot of this comes down to what the goal of quizbowl questions should be. Is the aim to ask about works that are being read at the university level, or is the goal to reward knowledge of some ill-defined canon of 'classic' works. I personally tend to agree with the former, but I don't ...

The asterisk is indeed a power mark, which may appear out of place, but there are one to two sentences preceding these final two. Your reformulation does disambiguate the 'after the revolution' clause, but removing the comma after the word revolution accomplishes the same task, albeit not as effecti...

Did anyone else notice the Marc Chagall question said he was born after the revolution? He was born in 1887 so assuming they are talking about the Russian Revolution that question had an error. Born in present-day (*) Belarus, after the revolution, he served as art director of the Moscow Jewish Sta...

Going through our packet, I can really only see three to four tossups that I believe could be truly labeled as obscure (Jakobson, Koopmans, NSC-68, and Grier). As far as East Asian subject matter, only one tossup and two bonuses dealt with that part of the world, if anything, the distribution was ti...

That "terrible Wisconsin packet"

As one of the authors of the Wisconsin packet, I am interested to know what exactly qualifies our packet as horrible. I concede that there were several tossups that were of above average difficulty, but I think, as a whole, that we fulfilled the distribution that was asked of the tournament with a p...

Gabe, are you claiming that NAQT had much more nonwestern content than ACF did? Leaving aside current events, I just don't think that's true. That was my impression. As far a current events go, I consider them to be just as valid of questions, perhaps more so than ones about mythology (but this is ...

I played at ACF regionals this year, and this was my impression from that tournament. Looking through the questions, most packets had 1-2 non-western subject matter tossups, and Texas' and one of the editors' packets had none. Look, you're full of shit. Just stop. Note, I was referring to tossups.

So much of the same complaints from the same people as we have every year after every NAQT tournament. This was my first ICT since 2002, and I enjoyed it greatly. True, not all of the questions were perfect, but I think that people need to differentiate between questions that are poorly written and ...
