[EDIT: oops, I'm silly. disregard]

Anyway, Carbondale Sectional:
1. Carbondale
2. Murphysboro
3. Marissa
4. Sparta
C. Cobden

We even managed to get accused of knowing the questions beforehand in the semifinal round. It was cool.

Err, I guess I didn't make it clear that the previous post I made was the argument nearly verbatim that was used against me by of someone who is representative of most teams in my immediate area and holds views contrary to the one I personally hold (I'm all for pyramidal questions, I'd love to see S...

Let me be the Devil's Advocate here for a second. (I am somewhat familiar with the quick-buzz format, and those who defend it). It seems to me that the consensus here is that "good" quizbowl is directly proportional to rewarding knowledge and inversely proportional to the amount of "b...

I totally agree that there should be more math history and theory. There's certainly no dearth of possible questions in the area, and I don't necessarily see why calculation should be the preferred style of math question. Computational math seems to veer away from the "knowledge" aspect of...

Not to, y'know, rehash old topics and be contrary, but I don't necessarily see a problem with the two math questions that were given as ridiculous: e^.5 is easily approximated using the MacLaurin Series for e^x (try it, it's neat). Or was the complaint in the low number of sigfigs it had to be appro...

Despite the fact that this question sucks anyway (not the worst I've heard, but hey), I love how loaded it is.

(From the SIAC conference series):
Planet A and B are 10 million miles apart. By what factor will their gravitational attraction be reduced if God moves them 60 million miles apart?

Well, I didn't go to the Kickoff (I'm not even sure we sent a team), so I can't comment about anything anyway. I'm probably the only person from that Kickoff that posts on/reads these boards, so it looks like you're going to have to wait for feedback :/ Too bad I didn't get to go though, I would hav...

...Carbondale is going? Interesting predicament...no one told me this. I suppose they'll be going captainless as I'll be acting out some of John Guare's finest that night.

I suppose I'll restate the general emotions of everyone when I say I had a great time at state, and I'm very grateful to the volunteers who put in the time to make the tournament so much fun. My comments to Fremd are certainly: congratulations, you really earned it and just flat-out outplayed us in ...

The UIUC ABT Solo had some pretty good questions (perhaps barring a question essentially made of Chuck Norris jokes). The science ones tended to be pretty intense, but they were still good. I know a lot of schools couldn't make it, but I had a lot of fun, and I'd certainly suggest that anyone who ca...

As far as regionals questions go, I'd have to agree that they were a little fast and rather jumbled. It seemed like one question would have a clue to be picked up instantly (like that Darcy one or the 5 sharps), and then the next question would either be really long or misleading (I buzzed in early ...

Now that regionals is over, is anyone changing their predictions for Sectionals? Oh, and by the way, I think I cried a little on the inside when I read Rockford's scores. Actually, scratch that, I cried a little on the outside. And by a little, I mean profusely. And by profusely, I mean I'm still cr...

Maybe it's just me, but I don't find it as bad that the moderator does not know the rules as it is that the moderators often do not know how to pronounce. Maybe this is more of a hill-folk sort of thing, but down here in Southern Illinois, rule disputes rarely, if ever, come up. The problems I usual...

Oh, no it wasn't me, it was my team member, and I do have to admit that it wasn't a terrible neg. The question mentioned something about it being used as heart medicine, but given that it was on television and seemingly so incorrect, I thought it was pretty funny. Here's one from me that was pretty ...

Interestingly enough in the Southern news, Carbondale lost to Salem in the Masonic regionals. Granted, we were down a few players to ICTM and Speech and what not, but I guess I'll go ahead and be the first person to complain about the ugly, ugly questions. Did anyone else notice a lack of everything...
