Re: IQBT Rookie Challenges Hosted by Qblitz - 10/17, 11/14, 12/12

The sample questions you posted here seem pretty hard for "Rookie" difficulty—they seem closer to a high school regular difficulty

Is there restricted eligibility for this event? To clarify: Do you want just novices or are other players allowed to play?

Re: LIT Mid-Atlantic Mirror @ Discord (9/5/20)

I'd like to echo Caleb's, Lyra's, Vishwa's frustrations about Angikar—this may be read as being angry/whatever about the Duke House team beating us, fine, but that's not what this is. After getting a little under 2 p/g in prelim games 1-4, he put up 8 against us in round 5. I understand that players...

Re: Fall Online Middle School Tournament [RAFT II]

Seeing the length of the LONESTAR tournament, we are looking for every way to make the tournament run more efficiently. I believe that with the measures we are looking at, this tournament will finish before 6:30 for most teams [all those playing the guaranteed nine games] with a sizable lunch break ...

Re: DC Metro Area Discussion - 2020-2021

I’d like to give some of my thoughts about the DMV circuit next year: National Contenders TJ A I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that TJ will be the #1 team in the country (especially on mACF), given that they have an argument to having the best science and literature coverage in the country. TJ’...

Re: Alabama 2020-2021 Discussion Thread

With all due respect, there are indeed a great number of sets being produced for this season [upwards of 30, 17 of them being standard "housewrites"]. These range in difficulty from high school novice to high school nationals difficulty, meaning that whatever difficulty level you need should be avai...

What does you presenting as an alternative to “good” quizbowl organizations mean for your organization? What is the impetus here? Who is writing this and what assurances do we have of question quality? I...

Re: On the Abundance of High School Sets During the Pandemic [And Its Problems]

There is an upside to having more sets--it makes it easier to find a set for a tournament. Also, if you get a bad report of a set from an early site, then you have options to switch to. The downside of people not getting rich from quizbowl is one of the oldest downsides in quizbowl. I guess I just ...

Not My Job: A Packet

After my last Laws and Treaties packet, I decided to write another packet. I put this together over the weekend, leading to what Matthew Siff called "bad questions that must have been enjoyable to write, and will be fun for someone who hears them." [I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist]. Anyways,...

On the Abundance of High School Sets During the Pandemic [And Its Problems]

No doubt due in part to the pandemic, a series of new sets intended for the high school difficulty [along with returns of older sets, including Harvard Fall and RAFT II], both announced and unannounced, have been cropping up. While I fully support the idea of increasing the amount of people involved...

Re: 2019-20 Groger Ranks Player Poll

Having just perused the responses on the last few years’ player polls after reading this one, I am bewildered by the overall low level of discourse/“shilling” that pervades these threads every year. I would imagine that the purpose of the yearly player poll is to encourage critical discussion about...

Re: 2019-20 Groger Ranks Player Poll

A warning: I will not be dropping a full list, but I will be doing some light shilling. Let's get to some players Matt Siff , in my view, is the clear-cut number one player in the country. Call me biased -- Matt Siff is better than specialists at their categories. He'll firstline tossups in any cate...

Laws and Treaties: A Vanity Packet

Hello all! For about two and a half months now, I have been working on a "Laws and Treaties" packet. This is a very loose theme, and answerlines will consist of political documents, speeches, law codes, and ideologies, in addition to specific laws and treaties. This is a 21/21 powermarked packet, wh...
