Re: Penn State Invitational (University Park, PA, 4/13/13)
All of this ad hominem is pretty immature, guys. I don't see what the problem is with swiss; it accomplishes the goal of reducing the chance of a slightly worse team being ranked higher than a slightly better team without requiring people play gazillions of round robin brackets day in and day out. I...

Re: Penn State Invitational (University Park, PA, 4/13/13)
If you are trying to make the argument that there is no variance in quizbowl- that things like player reaction time or the precise knowledge accessed in each packet is exactly the same in each game- I think you have some explaining to do. I've bothered to stop watching Game of Thrones for like five ...

Re: Penn State Invitational (University Park, PA, 4/13/13)
Quizbowl is fantastic at skill-testing between mismatched teams- the better team will basically win 100% of the time. This is not the case with closely matched teams. I distinctly remember State College A and Maggie Walker A playing something like 4 times at NAQT nationals over several days in 2006 ...

Re: Penn State Invitational (University Park, PA, 4/13/13)
While I can appreciate this, I would remind you that Mannheim A got absolutely destroyed in their first match-up against State College A, while they managed to beat State College A in the other two matches they played (thus likely would've been relegated to 3rd place at best). In addition to our expressed interest in hosting a mirror of this in the fall, Penn State *may* send a team or two to the VTech mirror of this (if it is, in fact, happening). Most of us are out of town over the summer, but we've got a few friends who I imagine I could bully into pitching in for gas ...

Re: Penn State Invitational (University Park, PA, 4/13/13)
I'd like to thank all of the teams that came, and I'd like to thank the coaches for their patience considering most of the tournament was organized by our underclassmen. We did an interesting combination of Swiss followed by double elimination which, in my opinion, worked almost exactly as I had ima...

Re: General discussion
As a quizbowler, I thought that these questions were pretty generally very-well edited. I think I saw a moderator stumble only once or twice throughout the day due to a formatting/spelling/grammar error, which puts ACF tournaments and the like to shame (yeah, Penn State hasn't *been* at an ACF tourn...

I feel like the boy who cried "TOURNAMENT!" seeing as I have, at least once, posted Penn State's interest in a tournament and then failed to follow up. I'm a terrible person. That said! Penn State requires 30 academic days (!) in order to get funding for a tournament (this is increasing to...

Penn State (read: me personally) is interested, but not sure about funding. The university is a bit of a dick when it comes to funding student activities, and paying a bunch of money so the little 'uns can get killed seems sub-optimal. I'll let you know what the deal is once I've talked to the treas...

The gist I got from that thread is that, although there's no good answer, 20% MAX on World history was absolutely the *wrong* answer which, when getting ready to write our school's packet for ACF fall, I am starting to feel very strongly about. Okay, it's looking like we will be here, but apparently October 1st corresponds to the first canning weekend for THON (and one of our two drivers is heavily involved with THON), so unless there's a canning location *near* UMD, we'll only have one team. But we'll be there!

I'm *fairly certain* that Penn State will be attending this, hopefully with two teams. We played our first tournament at ACF Fall 2009, so I don't think we'll be submitting a packet... unless I decide to write one next weekend. Which I might. Who the hell knows.
