Re: Online Quiz Bowl Can Be Improved

Some quick thoughts after playing ACRO-DEMIA this weekend: I was reminded that buzzer apps generally work well, but have the disadvantage of requiring the window to be focused for your buzz to work. Since you typically don't have a great visual indication of this when you have it opened side-by-side...

Re: Online Quiz Bowl Can Be Improved

A few thoughts: I agree that Zoom is the simpler platform to host a tournament on. It also generally has better audio and video, although it's a relatively small difference and I've anecdotally heard some people having better experience with one vs. the other. I do like Discord's chat features, plac...

Re: The World As It Is - Winter 2021

Hi everyone, this much-delayed tournament is finally getting close to completion. It's about 95% written and 60% edited. There will be 11 packets of 20/20. There is an 875 character cap on tossups and 750 character cap on bonuses. The majority of questions are written by either myself or Nick Jensen...

Re: 2020 Festivus [Date TBD, please answer the poll]

I'll also mention that I have no problem with having both this event on a different date and a more traditional Festivus. There's some danger that it would dilute the number of packets for both events but my suspicion is that there will be more packets available this year than last year given the la...

On Discord there's been some pushback to this. As someone who I think suggested that Em take the lead in organizing this, let me mostly offer a defense. I agree that there's some charm in last-minute Festivus submissions. As such, I think it makes sense to push back the packet deadlines and to expli...

Re: Why Doesn't Quizbowl Use Citations?

I suspect one reason is that citations offer no direct benefit to the main purpose of quizbowl questions, playing them in a game. And in fact I suspect they'd actually make the in-game experience worse if you end up getting delays for people asking "what was the citation for that leadin" in between ...

I've heard some tournaments are going with an approach where each room (and room/round pair?) is a separate Zoom meeting which is linked on the schedule. I'm in general in favor of an approach like this for "serious" tournaments. It's a relatively low barrier to entry and will make a lot of cheating more difficult. Of course, in practice it's going to be hard to get through to people that you need to do this setup and stick with it through the tourn...

Re: Wider camera requirements for online quiz bowl

I'll also note that I personally find the USB Extension Cord + Web Cam much easier to set up than a separate phone rig with multiple accounts. It's a one-time thing you do and then it basically works forever if you're playing tournaments from the same room.

I'm becoming more convinced that Zoom tournaments need something other than the Zoom chat to handle buzzes. I was trying my hardest to notice buzzes but Zoom's minimalist chat interface makes it really hard to see them without just taking your eye from the packet every few seconds.
