Re: CULT IRC Playtesting Schedule

Would be glad to help out, but am somewhat illiterate as to where the channel is. Cannot seem to find it on slashnet website. Any assistance is appreciated at prcastagna at hotmail dot com.

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Larissa Kelly Cleans Up on Jeopardy!

Guess this is the best place to post congrats. Last night's game, coming back in Double Jeopardy with both Daily Doubles gone to retake the lead was one of the more exciting games I'd seen in a while.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Experimental Tournament, 5/24

Sorry to be a little out of the loop, but could someone do a post (or email me at prcastagna at hotmail dot com) that explains the experimental intricacies of this tourney? Were there changes other than the 20-15-10 structure of tossups and the "Khon Hoc" drafting of teams? Thanks, Phil Ca...

Re: Georgetown?

They seem to have fallen dormant, but they did have an active circuit team for many years, and I was a member of those teams. If you would care to email me at prcastagna at hotmail dot com, I can tell you some more specifics that I know and possibly that there are buzzer systems and old questions ly...

Too Ironic

Apparently there is a "tournament" called the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) - that will stage a championship for teams that did not make the NCAAs or the NIT.

That is all,

Theme Packets in General

For years, I skipped the theme packet Saturday night at TRASHionals, even if there were packets on subjects I liked, because without the "built-in" idea of losing to keep people from negging all the time, they were no fun to play. When I did play, there were usually six words read before s...

The screw rule...

I remember playing this at Andy Goss's singles trash tourney, but the question wasn't finished out. Therefore, the first person to use it just was retaliated against by the screwee, and it just was a pain. I don't think it serves much purpose in a full-room game to finish out the question, since mos...

Keenans

Flax, Actually, Craig's 1st TRASHionals actually was TRASHionals III in Cleveland. It used to be held on CBI weekend, so Craig was not there. IIRC, you could play TRASHionals for $1 if you turned down your CBI bid, and we were very close my junior year to winning the CBI region, and we might have co...

TRASHionals Undergrads and other musings

At TRASHionals II (1999) in State College, an all-undergrad team (but not from the same school) won TRASHionals (Kenny Peskin, Anthony DeJesus, Ryan Seibel, don't remember the 4th). The same year, my team finished 3rd as an all-undergrad team (yes, I was in college once!) I don't think that could ha...

"Gimmick" Rules

I think the problem with the "Gimmick" Rules, is that people play so few tournaments, especially trash, that they are reluctant to fool around with them on the limited sets of questions on which they do get to play. While I have played in some sink/steal tournaments (fun, but breeds resent...

ASS

Well, last time I played in a Maryland Trash Tourney, the initials stood for Andy Sedearis Spectacular. I thought the set and the themes were good. Writing in theme is very difficult, and I thought that the writing was pretty good overall. I thought that the answer choices were good, as the amount o...

NAQT 1997-99

I don't remember any conference-type affiliation then. At Georgetown, we'd be playing teams like Maryland, GW. and UVA that John Thompson habitually ducked. We'd have fared better against Cal-State Sacramento, Southern University - New Orleans, St. Leo's, Rider, or any of the other cupcakes JT used ...

Trash answers

Being "unfamiliar" is different from being able to come up with the correct answer in a 5-second time frame. I am "familiar" with many bands, but being able to pull a correct answer on a band that doesn't have a big-time hit single is a tough endeavor, where lack of depth of know...

Trash Distribution

Well, To answer Jerry et al., I've never heard of Battlefield 1942 or Diablo (I'm under 30). I am vaguely aware that Warcraft is a game of some sort, and I've never played any Sim or Civ game in my life. I would however, answer a question on any Mike Tyson fighter in about 7 words. I just think this...

Total Points

My problem with total points is when the concept of a clock is in play, this can get skewed. I applaud NAQT's efforts to get experienced and "professional" moderators at tournament sites, but many of them simply cannot get through 28/28 a round, or 14/14 for a 9-minute interval (myself inc...

Tiebreakers

I don't see why points per bonus shouldn't always be used. My biggest pet peeve with tournaments has been sitting around waiting for circles of death to be broken or ties to be decided. More time is lost here than anywhere else in tournaments that run on needlessly. This also eliminates the slow rea...

NAQT Modifications

After reading this discussion thread, I have a question for Jerry, Chris, Matt...(I don't mean to say you all think in lockstep on everything, this is more of a general query to anyone) Aside from the centrally-written vs. team written and playing on a clock, and if NAQT took all of your suggestions...
