Seems like this is akin to asking why there aren't as many major league baseball players as there are minor league baseball players. As the difficulty of the questions increases, the number of people who have fun playing on them decreases. Since we've all rejected the idea of maintaining a hard ceil...

Haven't posted in months if not years, but I've got a few thoughts about this tournament. The TJ-Gov rivalry continues, I see. Hopefully this one can last through more than a few generations of high schoolers. I think both programs have the infrastructure to maintain an elevated quality of play, so ...

From a quick phone call from my dad I've garnered the following information: Virginia won, Maryland came in second, and Illinois came in third. I don't know who took the other places in the final round. Also, the margin of victory for Virginia was ten points. Apparently both Virginia and Maryland ga...

I like how the intricacies of TJ A's weaknesses are being aired in such a delightfully public forum... True. On the other hand, PACE is massively different anyway, and what are they gonna do about it? Dan is the only one who's ever cracked that case, and now he's on your side. Well, him and Wren. I...

It seems to me that when it comes to tossups, TJ A has mercureal players and solid ones. The mercureal ones have a tendency to compete with their own team and buzz far sooner than they actually know the answer, but when they're confident this results in powers. On the rare occasions they're unconfid...

just a lil' highlight from the playoffs; TJ A vs. Walton. Got through 26 tossups with 4 minutes left on the clock. 885 to 95, TJ wins. 14 powers, 2 negs. It works out to getting almost 35 points per tossup heard, if I recall correctly. By the way, what I took from the final is a) that TJ A can be fo...

Bored at work, so I made a map of all the schools sending teams to NAQT according to where Mapquest puts their high school, and if I made something like that, why not post it here? I had to make a few educated guesses, so a few dots might be off. I was going to make them different colors for differe...

Re: TJ A
Since the notoriously strong TJ A team will have to split up in a few weeks, I would like to know where we will see them next year. Sam at Harvard, Jacob at princeton (?), and where are the other two going? Correct on the Jacob thing. Dan is going to UNC-Chapel Hill, and Will is going to Princeton....

When did Virginia have to leave?. We left after our game against Texas, so that would have been the 3rd-to-last round. Then we had a bye, then we were to have finished up against you. We were going to try to get that bye switched to the end somehow so we wouldn't miss anything by leaving a round ea...

For one thing, it's fun. Besides that, it offers many of the benefits of a high school or college sport; camraderie, competition, travel, and yes, even a tiny bit of respect from some of your non-quiz bowl peers. Some of them. One specific thing I got from it was the ability to walk through my unive...

I think that you could simplify this by saying that the situation is almost exactly the same as the one incoming high school freshmen meet, except that in the intervening four years their ego has grown pretty well. I don't think I feel as intimidated by college people as I did of high school people ...

I guess a new nationals if it was made right would be good. As is I don't think it's gonna go well. But if it gets off the ground in the first place it'll have gone outside my expectations, indicating a misjudgement of the data on my part. So if it does pop up, it very well could do well, since the ...

The Edit Option (people who run this site, take notice)
As some may have noticed, I and others' posting styles lead to us looking stupid and getting in the way when we must correct ourselves, due to the lack of an edit option. For many reasons, I believe that if possible , an edit option would be the very first thing I would have changed about this site....
