Goucher College for me -- which unfortunately, does not have a quiz bowl team. I may start one but I'm not sure I have the patience... According to Financial Times, the acceptance rates at most US colleges is going to be reported at historic lows though with a caveat that more students are applying ...

Ding ding! We have a winner! Maybe since it's MST3K it's more of a meta-quote than a real quote... kinda like the American/Coven thing. The movie featured in the MST3K feature movie was "This Island Earth," an absolutely horrible flick, though admittedly not as bad as some of the pictures...

Hey, man, don't be knocking the Star Trek...if I had my way, my whole team would use Star Trek pseudonyms, but they always stop me and I end up using my boring old real name...*sigh* What's the use of being a geek if you don't get to show it off? Well-run tournament overall -- I had a good time and ...

Recently, a question mentioned a character being involved in a robbery with Bill Sykes. Unfortunately, my first thought was of the horse-stealing Bill Ferny from The Fellowship of the Ring and I spent my entire five seconds trying to figure out who might have been involved in that robbery with him. ...

Santa With Muscles. Hulk Hogan is Santa Claus. Not a promising premise, some would say. And some would be right.

"Your guess is as good as mine, Larry. But one thing's sure- Inspector Clay's dead. Murdered. And somebody's responsible!"

A classic of the modern American cinema.

At practice two days ago:

Coach: (Some NASA probe) recently arrived in orbit around what closest star to the Earth?

Me: *buzzes, enthusiastically* Alpha Centauri!

My teammates nearly had a fight about who got to smack me upside the head.

Stuyvesant was an intimidating team to play -- very intense, though they did neg a lot. When we played them, they balanced their negs with enough buzzes to pull it out, but I'm not surprised to hear that that's what worked against them. RichMo A was very strong when we played them in the quarterfina...

Good old random draw, I suppose. Now as long as Blake isn't in that same semifinal group too.... I don't think we are...I'm not positive -- I'll have to go back and look at the bracket listings on Tuesday but if my memory serves I think we're not in the same one. Blake won its first round match. Do...

This wasn't exactly a neg, as I didn't actually buzz, just said it, but I still thought it was funny.

"Julius Caesar held during his reign what two-word honorific title, currently used by Benedict XVI?" (looking for Pontificus Maximus)

Me: (after some thought) "The Pope"?

My policy on deferring sometimes ends up being that any time my teammate sounds more sure than I do on a topic that is not my strongest (usually history) -- even if I know what they're saying and how to pronounce it -- I may dish it off to them just because of the fear that I might somehow screw it ...

I think that age/experience should not be the determining factor -- if you know the answer, you know it regardless of how long you've been with the team. Fourth players are not there just to fill up empty space -- ideally you want them participating as well. On the other hand, usually the captain or...

[1] Consider your role on the team. If you're the team's only strong literature person and there's a literature question which you think is about Hemingway, you may as well be aggressive and try for it. I take issue with this point. When a person knows an answer, they should not be hindered by &quo...

I think it does depend in some ways on what format you're discussing -- in non-pyramidal, speedball rounds with predictable timing/structure, you can often feel free to hit the buzzer because you *know* that the easy clue is going to be there even when you haven't heard it. I count the D.C. area &qu...

Blake HS will be returning its top three starters next year. I don't know whether Whitman is graduating most of its A-Team or not but I remember that their B Team was quite impressive at the UMD tournament last month or whenever it was (it's exam time, my brain is switched off completely... )...
