Re: Quizbowl in the "Alternate Universe": Introduction
I know this has been inactive for a long time and maybe this discussion has been continued on a different thread but I would love to see more of this. A couple of questions: One, if you were to look on a national scale, are there any national Quiz Bowl organizations as big or bigger than NAQT/pyrami...

Re: Thoughts on starting a team from the outside & outreach in general
After many years of trying similar things at the HS level and somewhat at the college level, I'm pessimistic about the ability of large-scale outreach efforts to make a major difference at the national level. I have had many experiences similar to Fred's at various points and the amount of work to ...

Re: Thoughts on starting a team from the outside & outreach in general
First off, thank you for making this post: this is a particularly relevant thing in North Carolina I think because there are only a couple active college quiz bowl teams in the state out of 68 four year universities (and 58 community colleges), while nine HBCUs listed as active on the HCASC website....

Re: Greatest High School Quiz Bowl Players Ever Other Than Rohan Ganeshan
Can somebody change the name of this thread to Greatest High School Quiz Bowl Players Ever Other Than Rohan Ganeshan? Rohan has definitely established himself among the HS greats, but I don't necessarily think that makes him the consensus greatest. Generally I think there clearly a lot of different...

Re: Greatest High School Quiz Bowl Players Ever
Another very successful HS player I noticed while idly trawling through HSNCT results from past years is Kurtis Droge: In 2008 he was lead scorer at HSNCT, with a 19 point gap over number 2, a much larger gap than most HSNCT top scorers. He also was 4th highest scorer HSNCT in 2007, and 2nd highest ...

Re: Greatest High School Quiz Bowl Players Ever
this has occasionally been a cute point of discussion but imo it's not that fun to discuss people who peaked in hs since it often involves a lot of unhealthy study habits in people who are maybe even less well equipped for some testy situations than college aged players (who often also aren't great...

Greatest High School Quiz Bowl Players Ever
Much has been written on the best college quiz bowl players, but looking only at their performance in high school, who are the best quiz bowl players in history? I'd imagine some of the most successful college players would make this list, but also maybe some ones who converted slightly less well, o...

Re: Greatest Upsets in Quizbowl History
I'm not sure any individual games at this year's ICT are particularly extraordinary upsets (both of the teams that beat Chicago were obviously extremely good, and I think Cornell was probably favored in 12 of their 13 games), but Chicago having 3 PPB and 100 PPG more than any other team and losing ...

Re: Best Debut Performances?
I have heard that half of UWaterloo's ICT DII winning team this year had never played quiz bowl before. I cannot confirm this but consultation of the NAQT website suggests at least some of them were only recorded as playing one novice tournament before SCT. I can see how that wouldn't count as "...

Re: Greatest Upsets in Quizbowl History
Lambert was the biggest upset, and it definitely had both the element of both the other team negging a lot and also lucky content. Mostly I think it was a lot of luck, and of course BMB being an incredible player. I didn't consider this an upset in the moment, though it might have been - that ECHHS...

Re: Greatest Upsets in Quizbowl History
Not sure how much of an upset this was but my team ECHHS getting third in 2022 HSNCT despite being rated 45th in Groger Ranks going in, by defeating Lambert, Kinkaid, Strake Jesuit, Detroit Country Day, Great Valley, Ridgewood, and Saratoga, as well as going 1-1 against DCC and Solon, all of whom wa...
