Re: VETO 2016 @ University of Toronto (August 6th, 2016)
This is the first time we think someone's been injured by an actual quizbowl question. Here are the stats. Something is wrong in the stats for the Round 9 game between Gravon Green's Pokemon and The Ego and It's Property: according to the Scoreboard, there were 21 tossups answered (and bonuses play...

Re: VETO 2016 @ University of Toronto (August 6th, 2016)
Seven people showed up for VETO at UBC today, and we organized ourselves into three teams: FARSIDE: Peter Taming of the Sandshrew: Carlos, Hanson, Mike Master and Charmander: Philip, Amy, Jo This was the lowest turnout in 18 years of VETO in Vancouver. Also, every player was over the age of 30 and h...

Imma bring a ragtag bunch of irregulars from Hamilton, some of whom may want to join a team. If there are any openings, or teams willing to take alternates, that'd be awesome. I mean, I don't mind having 7 people on my team, but that can get a bit unwieldy. Maybe this article will help: https://www...

I'm against penalizing knowledge, even when it's the moderator's knowledge. Unless you're using diacritical marks that are so rare that some word processors might mess up the letter they're marking, it's nice to include them if you can. They might be distracting to many or most readers, but to help ...

Sorry for the lateness of this response. The VETO packets have been posted on the Stanford archive . My main issue was with the visual bonuses. I'll have more time to discuss this in a couple of days, but I see that a lot of people who went to VETO yesterday were pretty unhappy about how it went. I suppose that what I see of VETO and its players is very different from what is seen by people who play in Ontario, because for most of the regulars in Vancouver, it's the only quiz bowl tournament they play in all year. Okay, so I think we've found the root of the issue. See, in Ontario, we're ac...

I think that multimedia can be valuable when you're looking at fine arts. It's just gimmickry; it doesn't add educational or competitive value. You've give...

This playoff system, as set up, excessively punishes teams for losing to the top teams in the tournament because it perversely ignores teams' losses to teams that are not the top teams in the tournament.
