I can see not allowing a student to play solo since there is a Bee division specifically for that but I don't see any reason that teams of two should not be allowed. Perhaps they modified bonuses so they only have two parts, which I understand is fairly common in Georgia? If your principal agrees to pay for a quiz bowl coach, he/she should be able to find a faculty member at your school who would be willing to take on that position. At least in Georgia, teams that go to tournaments on a regular basis generally have coaches who are paid a supplement/stipend.
