Re: Discussion of Specific Questions

I think some of the biology questions had easy clues very early on. Specifically: *The retina question- it describes retinoblastoma in the second clue which I would argue is one of the two most well known oncogenes and the only oncogene that I can think of that is named for the tissue that it is der...

Unfortunately this will never become a button because I no longer have button making capabilities but I'm happy to have this chance to share it with the quizbowl community.

Re: NAQT Security Discussion

R. was referring to this incident , not this incident . (The latter case had nothing to do with the security of NAQT's website; rather it involved an NAQT editor inappropriately revealing question content to players who were about to play the 2012 ICT.) Well, an "editor" who was not editing the 201...

Re: Article in Slate about ACF Nationals

To judge solely from this article, the paucity of XX-chromosomed persons in quizbowl can be explained by 1). Women's collective unwillingness to "show off [their] knowledge" (apparently the BC Calculus exam is an oasis from such misgivings!) and 2). The tendency of male quizbowlers to make ambiguou...

Re: Article in Slate about ACF Nationals

Someone wrote an article in response to the slate article. http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2012/05/14/quiz_bowls_sexism_and_women_can_geekiness_breed_misogyny_.html I really hope everyone reads this article and then explains that the lack of women in quizbowl has something to do with fragile la...

Re: Science

I'm going to make detergents accepted all the way through. I don't think they're ever ruled out, do you? I agree. I think you could be right (particularly about that one); here it is: This molecule's activity is upregulated in the endolymphatic sac in patients with Meniere's disease, possibly helpi...

Re: Science

I generally enjoyed the science in this set. One thing that stands out for me though is the question on surfactants. The question started describing SDS pretty early on and I buzzed in the middle of that description and said "detergents". I don't really remember the first clue so it could have been ...

Re: ACF Fall Midwest at UChicago

These stats are for all of the 11 prelim games. For some reason the stats program says that all but two of the teams played 10 games even though if you go to the team detail and count games played there are 11 for each team. Rounds 13, 14, and the finals will probably be up tomorrow or monday. Some ...
