Re: Terrapin Invitation Tournament (12/3/11) at Maryland

Due to several factors, Maryland is discontinuing plans to edit and host the Terrapin Invitational Tournament this spring. We plan on hosting a house-written high school spring tournament on May 5th, and splitting our editing attention between that tournament and TIT would do a disservice to both to...

Re: Terrapin Invitation Tournament (12/3/11) at Maryland

Due to my inability to secure mirrors, and the relatively small number of packets submitted to this tournament, it is being postponed until the Spring. Pending final discussion with the Maryland leadership, the target date is May 5th.

Could someone post the flare stars tossup? Also the bonus on protostars with a part on Kelvin-Helmholtz contraction and the bonus on AGN (I think) with a part on magnetic fields that mentions the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. Re: Events that are on the docket

Maryland intends to produce another incarnation of the (packet-submission) Terrapin Invitational Tournament next year, aiming for a late January-ish date similar to last year and with the same target difficulty as last year. This is in addition to the wild, crazy, and probably quite-reasonable-diffi...

Re: TIT Discussion

I thought the tournament was generally ok, but there were a few problems I noticed in science. I felt like numerous times, a question contained a clue the author misunderstood or didn't fully understand. The best example I've seen of this was caught by Libo in the Equation of State tossup. One exam...

TIT Discussion

There are no delayed mirrors of the set, so I'm going to open it up for discussion. I'll send it to the packet archives in a day or two, after I've fixed a few of the sillier formatting errors. A few of the questions had powermarks but no bolding, and at least one question had no powermark (oops!). ...

Every tournament needs more buzzers, even if you think you see a few stacked in the back of the room. Bring them, and we'll give you a $5 discount even if we do have enough.

Are question writers expected to put in power marks, or is that something only the editors are doing? You may put in power markings if you like, but it's not necessary. I will almost certainly end up moving them around, so don't spend too much time deciding whether the fourth most famous work of yo...

Looking back at the question on the Halting Problem, I believe Chaitin's constant was name-dropped far too early. I recognize that computer science has far, far from a fleshed out canon, but to me Chaitin's constant comes second only to "undecidable" and "something stopping" for ...
