Re: Schedule for the Collegiate Polls

Maybe we should take a meta-poll to figure out when the collegiate polls should be. The only question is how to decide how often and when to take the meta-polls. Luckily, there is a solution.

Re: ACF Distribution

Yeah dude, I know what the "major sciences" and "minor sciences" are. I'm asking if there's any other meaning to certain things being major or minor sciences.

Re: ACF Distribution

Hey, so I've read through this thread and I still don't understand what a "minor science" is; could someone explain that to me? Definitionally, a minor science is something that gets less on the distribution than a major science does, but does the label "minor science" denote anything in addition to...

Re: Minnesota/Penn Open IV Discussion

Okay, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but over the course of the entire tournament I heard only two math tossups and zero math bonuses, a situation that is really kind of shocking to me, because I've always thought math to be at least as important as, say, physics or chemistry, each of ...

Re: talk about individual questions here

I feel that the "Ruby" tossup in Div2 was definitely a bad idea. The useful information in the first clue is "this is an object-oriented programming language with scripting capabilities," which applies equally well to Python, as well as likely a whole bunch of similar but less well-known programming...

Re: 2010 HSNCT discussion thread

I might not be in the majority, but I felt that the math-comp questions were well-handled. The easy parts required math that could be done mentally in a second or two if one understood the theory behind the question (e.g., "What value is below and between the two 10s on the 6th row of Pascal's trian...

Re: Rocket Surgery I (San Diego) - 2/27/10

Round report is up now. I'm working to correct any mistakes and to correctly split the rounds into their brackets and divisions; those final split stats will be up in a day or two.

Edit: okay, stats with afternoon brackets are now up.

Re: Proposition: Get Rid of Trash

There are a few differences between classical music and pop culture though, viz., all or most of the classical music you will be asked about in quiz bowl is really good, while a great deal of pop culture is irredeemably sucky.

Re: Rocket Surgery I (San Diego) - 2/27/10

Yeah. Obviously, as a Southern California team that competes regularly in the good quizbowl tournaments around here, we've never even had any experience with the blurt rule at a legitimate ( viz. , not Academic League) tournament, and we're certainly not going to champion it or any of the other vest...

Update: Rocket Surgery I is now PACE-affiliated, and the top two teams will qualify for NSC. We'll also be pursuing a gold-level certification.

So far we have seven teams signed up. Three from RB, two from Edison, and two from an Arizona school.

Re: Southern California '09-'10

Well, the first step, obviously, would be to determine interest in attending NASAT. Presumably, there will be more than enough interest among SoCal players to field a team (assuming that we're split off from NorCal), but it would be helpful to know exactly who might have an interest in being on the ...

LJ will likely be sending a couple of teams.

EDIT: I guess not, if the tournament has been cancelled (as I have been led to believe).
