First, I want to say that I enjoyed reading for the online mirror. During day 1 I found myself thinking, "Wow, I would be playing horribly," but by the end of packet 13 I thought "I'd be losing to better players, not being destroyed by an unfair set of packets." In retrospect I w...

Re: Rethinking Middle School/Novice Difficulty

For the past few years I've edited a MS set for Texas Quiz Bowl Camp. The set has been aimed at the youngest and most inexperienced players at the camp. I think there are a number of different challenges in producing sets that are accessible to new MS players (and to new HS players as well). 1) The ...

Re: NAQT eligibility changes for 2018-19

Individuals wishing to compete at high school tournaments must not turn 19 until after the current competition year—in other words, if they will still be 18 or younger as of next July 31. This seems like a pretty big change, especially to be announced a month and a half into the school year. If som...

First of all, I want to mention that most of my involvement with college quiz bowl since 2009 has been quite peripheral--lurking on these forums and playing a few open tournaments. I'm approaching this thread mostly as a high school teacher and quiz bowl coach (also, FWIW, I've spent seven years tea...

Overall I thought the set was really well done. My obvious comparison point is with This Tournament is a Crime, which I played at Rice last year. I think CMST did a better job of having gettable powers, and even first lines that were buzzable. I also thought that 30s on bonuses were more attainable,...

I thought the third part of the Esquire/JFK/racing bonus was confusingly worded. I was pretty sure that "The Last American Hero" was about auto racing, but the last clue was about the Hunter S. Thompson Kentucky Derby piece, so we said horse racing and got it right. Now, I believe the bonu...

My guess is that the vast majority of sets have some teams (at one mirror or another) put up less than 10 PPB.
