Re: 2010 NAQT HSNCT
Again, they're probably just really good at situational play, but, statistically speaking, it seems like a lot of teams deserved to place higher. Does this represent a flaw in the card system, at least in playoffs? I don't think it's the fault of the card system that Adair got the place they did. T...

Re: 2010 HSNCT discussion thread
If a team is consistently getting zeroes on mathcalc bonuses, they're clearly really weak in math, and if a team is getting thirties, they've got someone with relatively deep knowledge of whatever is being asked (truth-tables, integrals, Pascal's triangle, etc.). Most of the complaints seem to be c...

Re: NAC schedule/discussion 2010
Would it be nuts to say that literally so few of the nation's competitive teams even participate in a Chip-written event per year that it would actually not really demonstrate an anti-Chip bias to remove this from the Nationals forum? Why does it matter to have an anti-Chip bias? The format and que...

Re: 2010 HSNCT discussion thread
A fair amount of people take DiffEQ in high school No. Yeah a grand total of 0 people from my high school have ever taken this class before graduating. Yeah, see, I took differential equations in high school but still ended up zeroing that bonus. We never learned anything about RLC circuits, but I ...

Re: 2010 HSNCT discussion thread
I have to agree with Mr. Vinokurov. The twin primes conjecture is a fair and common part of the high school national-level math canon. A simple answer of "primes" would simply not suffice for an answer to such a question. However, I cede that the mention of the Sieve of Eratosthenes tended...

The sums on the spreadsheet and your original post are one-off each other, Fred, from Manual down to Alpharetta. Not a big deal, though.

Seems like next year will be the year of dynamic duos: Jim and Mike, Brandon and Michael, Nishanth and Eugene, and Jackson and Saajid.

Re: How to Study for Computer Science
Well, the best and most obvious way is to take AP Computer Science, if your school offers it. If not, there are a lot of introductory level computer science textbooks out there which are fairly easy for someone new to the canon to understand. I recommend checking the library over paying for one.

Re: Who is really anti-math?
I think that BOTH computational and noncomputational math are important and should be present. But, personally, when facing computational math tossups or bonuses, I know how to do them, but I think we are not given enough time (often 3-10 seconds). With the 15 point math bonuses in PACE format, in ...
