Re: Illinois '10 - '11

Poaching quizbowlers and mathletes from other schools is what IMSA's all about! *sarcasm* This is why IMSA students should not be allowed to post. Actually, this, in addition to all the other reasons. Now, we shouldn't let a few bad posts blemish IMSA students' reputations. We're not ALL totally in...

Re: Chemistry?

I have a decent background in chem, so I don't find that I have to study for it as much as I do for other categories. But, I took the AP Chem test this year, and I found that the review book I used (Barron's 5th ed.) covered nearly everything in the quiz bowl canon. It has its fair share of trivia a...

Re: How small is the math canon?

What about Erdos? Far more famous for his ludicrous life story than for his mathematics, much of which (actually, everything I've encountered) is well out of the reach of high schoolers--for the most part, anyway. And this is really a problem. I've studied a lot of the work of Erdos. He did a lot o...

Re: Know your current events

I have BBC World and nytimes on RSS feed, so I regularly see new headlines. Also, Google News is my homepage. So far that seems to have been enough for me to catch up on current events, but not nearly enough to get them in quizbowl.

Re: Music Theory Help

I'm a musician, and I power a lot of music tossups just because I'm familiar with the pieces. I suggest just listening to them, or playing them if you're a musician. Reading an article or two about them can also help. I agree that being a musician and playing lots of pieces will help in quiz bowl, ...

Re: Pre-Nationals Poll

I definitely feel Stevenson should be number 1, they're definitely ahead of Auburn. Auburn is losing one of their best players while Stevenson keeps two great juniors.

Re: New Practice Techniques?

As far as practicing without the team goes, we spend a lot of time reading sets individually and reviewing lists and vocab terms. It seems to have helped a lot between January (when we first started competing in tourneys, without practicing much) and now.

Re: Getting Good at History

Just paying attention in class seems to have helped us with history tossups... also, memorizing the stock clues and key vocab terms is also a pretty good place to start.
