Re: Novice Tournaments in New England

Sorry, but I don't understand what the goal of running tournaments like this is, or what is not "easygoing" about the way things are done now. It's not like quizbowl requires putting on a tux and having a herald announce your team's arrival with a scroll--we're pretty "lighthearted&q...

RE: all trash postings Trash is fun but I am going to back Matt on this one. The problem we've had in New England is that we aren't all that hot nationally. Anything that trends towards better more frequent quiz bowl is all for the good (note the operative word better). This assumes that schools an...

As it stands, I don't have a clue what they're doing. I've basically just be asked to pass along my guidance as to how I set things up, and once they have it, to let the club members go from there. Honestly I don't really care what they do, it was just my idea to give them 'something'. If they could...

Lyndon State College had previously held two tournaments using the Fall Novice set - one in 2010 and the other in 2011 (both TDd by myself). Re: Quiz Bowl in Maine

If someone EVER were able to get more contacts from Maine, that would be great particularly for the New England circuit. When I ran my alma mater's QB tournament in 2011 and '12, we had an average of 10-12 teams total from VT and NH - one of my main goals from 2013 was to expand to Maine to increase...

Unfortunately in this area of the US (a very rural one at that), most schools who are undergoing budget issues are going to be less likely to take an investment in something (regardless of how much it'd matter to the kids). I don't think I was clear on my "novice" point. I'm merely saying that, as the PSAB teams already have a separate JV competition, the fact that we offer a separate novice bracket makes it more likely those schools will come to PHAT as it gives them a natural incentive to bring more than o...

Re: RESULTS: PHAT VI (12/7/12 at South Burlington, VT HS)

We've had a separate novice division the last two years, and I think that has helped with out-of-state recruiting -- especially in the Glens Falls league -- so if anything, that will likely continue to grow going forward. I might catch Hell for this, but so be it. I played in the Post-Star league (...

I think the cart is in front of the horse here - you need to establish contact with the teams first and just work to get them even remotely used to the idea of playing good quizbowl at invitationals and find out how many of those teams there are who are willing to play stuff. The issue is that many tournaments using four-quarter format also use non-pyramidal tossups. That could be one of the reasons why I dislike the 4Q format.
