Re: 2021 NAQT ICT: online, April 10
Time begins at recognition , not at the time of signaling. Yale has two players with the same first name. I have three questions about this circumstance, which also may apply to situations in which two players on different teams have identical or similar names. (1) Are moderators under instructions...

Re: 2021 NAQT ICT: online, April 10
I believe in the video it says you can start your answer before being recognized. Not sure about the timing of it though. Hope that's right, if not, my b! We have elected not to use BuzzIn.Live’s timing feature at this time, but the discussion here has the other aspects right. The moderator must re...

Re: Suggestions About ICT Tiebreakers
Conversely, stop bringing buzzers that don't :bees:-ing work. My room played part of the morning on a hybrid set, with one set having some buzzers that occasionally didn't work, and another set, labeled right on the damn case "Missing a cord". If it's missing a cord, why the hell are you ...

Re: Human-computer quiz bowl match at the 2015 HSNCT
At least part of the reason we didn't have the computer play against our own members (Yaphe, Hoppes, Teitler, Hart? *shudders*) was question selection. We would have had to source some questions that those guys hadn't seen; it was a lot easier to use two rounds of the actual HSNCT set, which rules o...

Big time. I had 12 people in rooms Sunday night who weren't scheduled to be there, at least 5 Monday night. And those were just the ones who asked us for help.

Re: Becoming Part of the Community
Then again, maybe I'm not truly part of the community until Nathan Murphy remembers my name at HSNCT staff check-in. Pick your favorite. Response #1: "Sure I remember your name. It's your face that doesn't stick." Response #2: "If I have to recognize somebody at check-in for th...

Re: Becoming Part of the Community
After a childhood of Jeopardy!, Geography Bee, whatever quiz games I could find on computer or get my family to play with me on the table, etc, my high school announced "People interested in quiz bowl, show up here on this day." Freshman me had no idea what "quiz bowl" was but it...

Re: "Unsporting" attempts to delay the game
Some of these are specifically called out elsewhere in the rules; I didn't go look to get the rule number, but one example is repeated requests for time-out at the wrong time, or after a team has already called time-out.

Re: 2014 HSNCT Consolation Rounds Discussion
Is there a possibility that the 2015 HSNCT will guarantee more than 10 rounds? In other words, will the current "consolation rounds" actually count for something next year (like PACE offers a few more games Sunday morning even for the lower brackets)? NAQT's belief (stated in the other th...

Re: 2014 HSNCT discussion
To address the consolation stuff: My intention had been this: 7:50 staff check-in 8:00 Greg tells staff how things will work (takes ~20 minutes); staff told they'll go to rooms after teams have brackets 8:20 or 8:30: Greg gets brackets and keys, briefs teams 8:40 or 8:45: Greg gets packets, everybod...

Re: Moderators at HSNCT
I'd like to credit NAQT for the method they've taken up for evaluating new staffers on Friday night. For those unaware, volunteers who had not read at an HSNCT before were paired with experienced HSNCT readers for the practice rounds, allowing the older volunteers to determine who should only be sc...

Re: Moderators at HSNCT
I've always wondered why NAQT continues to do things like putting Seth and Selene, or Bernadette and I, in the same room, when either of them/us are more than capable of competently reading a round and would mean one fewer room getting through 16 tossups per game. As far as I've known, going back s...

Re: 2014 NAQT ICT: March 29, Chicago
Did anyone happen to see a black notebook with a Harvard logo on it? I think I accidentally left it in the Grand Ballroom after the awards ceremony, and I was wondering if anyone from NAQT picked it up. I have it; I called your teammate but he didn't manage to find me in time. Where should I send i...

Re: A second is a defined length of time
Correct me if I'm wrong, Susan, but I think that's the wrong thing - I think we're talking about the five (ACF) / two (NAQT) seconds permitted to begin an answer after signalling. That rules citation is about a tie between the buzzer and moderator, not between the beginning of an answer and the mode...

Re: A second is a defined length of time
(which I believe is that a tie goes to the player, but honestly that might not even be codified). I'm not deeply familiar with ACF rules, but NAQT's rules do codify this. An answer to a tossup must begin within 2 seconds after the player has been recognized. An answer begun after the moderator has ...

"There are 0 moderator evaluations for Aidan Mehigan." After making an account, is there some other step I need to do to make stuff show up? Aidan, your evals appear to have been tagged to somebody else by mistake. Jonah just went and fixed it, so they should show up properly. Edit: Jonah...

Re: Travelling with large trophies - a logistical problem
During the set-up time period for HSNCT (or the other Nationals tournaments), NAQT volunteers and staff unbox all the trophies and assemble the team ones. There's always a bunch of boxes and a large heap of packing material at the end of this and my recollection is that it's set aside somewhere for ...

Re: Outreach ideas for Collegiate Novice 4
Certainly, we could have done so. I'm not honestly certain how interested other schools would have been; some would and some wouldn't, probably. Until one of us ended up on an NAQT staff invite list (thanks to College Jeopardy) nobody at Gonzaga had heard of either NAQT or ACF; I can't speak to othe...

Re: Outreach ideas for Collegiate Novice 4
Assuming Gonzaga wasn't geographically isolated from other teams: would forming your own student organization have been a viable option? Would it have been viable? Yes - we could have formed a club and gotten budget from student gov't and the rest. However, I don't think it would've changed anythin...

Re: Outreach ideas for Collegiate Novice 4
See, I don't think those CBI teams were real teams that would have met and practiced and competed for more than 1 tournament a year. They had an intramural tournament that picked who represented the school and that was it. True, but they obviously were interested, and it's possible that they just d...

Re: 2011 HSNCT discussion
Just remembered: it's not as important as other things going on on Sunday, but teams not in the playoffs should have been told not to watch the first playoff round if they wanted to play scrimmages. Or maybe they were told that and some teams didn't get the message: we had that issue in at least tw...
