Re: MUT 2013 Specific Question Discussion Thread

I don't yet have the packets in front of me, so I can't point out exactly where these things are, but two music questions that confused me spring to mind, both because the lead-in clue seemed too obvious to be possible. The first was the Debussy one - it described the most famous feature (the flute ...

Re: falsifiability tossup and what to do in situations like this

But equally "any yokel" with "a meagre understanding of philosophy" probably shouldn't be buzzing in on the second line of a philosophy question on a hunch. Also, the principle of induction isn't "demonstrated" by the existence of black swans (which is what the questio...

Re: falsifiability tossup and what to do in situations like this

The two clues after that aren't great, but I don't feel they point to induction in any meaningful way. I mean, the black swan is clearly supposed to be referencing the idea that a black swan falsified the theory that all swans are white. Players are not supposed to read the question writer's mind. ...

Re: falsifiability tossup and what to do in situations like this

10. Imre Lakatos questioned this idea by asking if Adams and Leverrier had not discovered Neptune. Carl Hempel used the Raven Paradox to challenge its generalizability. This principle is often demonstrated by noting the existence of black swans. Its formulator rejected the prevailing positivist and...

Re: Tournament Discussion

Without wanting to jump on the bandwagon and flog a dead horse (forgive the mixed metaphors), I'm going to have to agree with John on the Auden tossup - having spoken to others, there wasn't a room at our mirror in which that wasn't powered on the first line, often by people who have no idea of lite...

Re: WIT Mirror at Oxford, UK 02/03/2013

For the sake of keeping things up-to-date and in case anyone is interested, the current field is:

Warwick (3)
OU
KCL/Southampton Chimera
Manchester
Imperial
Sheffield (2)
Oxford (indeterminate number, probably 4 or 5)

The aim is probably to have fourteen teams playing.

Re: ACF Fall 2012 Discussion

I can't actually be bothered to find which questions I'm referring to, but there was a toss-up on wavelength, I think, which mentioned Raleigh scattering, and then a bonus later which gave the same clues in the toss-up asking for Raleigh as an answer. Also, the lead-in to the Elgar question wasn't u...

Re: Fine arts/music

I think it's also important to consider this from the player's perspective, as in, who's going to get which toss-ups. I mainly sit around waiting for the classical music toss-ups and get relatively few of the others, and given that there's only one per packet (plus occasionally an opera one in the m...

Re: ACF Fall Discussion

I played the Oxford mirror yesterday (and seem to be the first to comment from over here so far). We don't get tournaments like this over here really, and it was great of Kyle and the rest of OUQS to organise it. It was good that very few toss-ups fell dead, but there were several that went to the e...
