Re: 2015 Middle School History Bowl Discussion

Let me just say that both my husband and I had a GREAT time staffing these events. I so enjoyed reading to the elementary aged players on Saturday. They were so intense and nervous, and literal, and sweet, and very intelligent! The parents are as nervous as the kids at those matches. When I told the...

Re: IHSA

Hmmmm. As a follow up question, do the hosting coaches get to pick the order of the match packets, or did everyone play all the questions in the same order yesterday? The packets are labeled with the rounds in which they are supposed to be used. Was there an issue with that? No, not that I know of,...

Re: Illinois NAQT State Championship @ Fenton HS, 2/25/2012

Just found out from my team today that this tournament is the same day as IHSA Regionals for Math Team. Ugh, this will seriously deplete my starters. . . . We'll do our best with some of my B team subbing in!

Re: IHSA

Too bad they are not in our Masonic Sectional, we could try out our Math against them there. . . Most of my A team is also on our Math team, and they are undefeated so far this year. Not the same kind of competition I know, but helpful!

Re: IHSA

At our meeting, not only did they begin the ranking with the weighted winning percentage, but then coaches took well longer than the prescribed time to advocate for their teams. This allowed some coaches to wax on at length about the superior quality of the IHSA format and tournaments that his team ...

Re: Jr. Wildcat III at Northwestern (3/3/12)

I have written to Amy Robb at Wauconda Middle School to encourage her to attend with a team. I would even be willing to bring them myself, so let me find out what she thinks! Can you tentatively wait-list a Wauconda team?

Re: Poetry Study/Help

Thanks so much everybody. 'These are great tips. . . I also came across a site that accompanies the Norton Anthology of Poetry, I'm thinking that may be useful too. Now I have to persuade some of my students that they will ENJOY reading the poetry, and walk them through these other steps. I need a f...

Poetry Study/Help

To coaches or players:

Can you suggest a frequency list or study guide for poetry? I have some strong literature students, but this seems to be a weak area for us. Any tips you have would be appreciated!

Re: DAFT III Mirror - hosted by Belvidere North

We have interest, but I have to check with my team as to how many can come - as well as my A.D.

I think this is an ACT date, so I may lose some kids to that. I will let you know a.s.a.p.

Thanks!

Okay, I have the go-ahead. I will bring Wauconda A for the competitive bracket, and B for the regular. Let me know what we need to register.

Re: Fall Novice mirror @ Northwestern (10/1/2011)

In response the the student that suggested the staff could disallow certain players, I would propose that such players KNOW they are not novices, and they might gracefully demur on their own. They might realize that if other players have a chance to get stronger then their whole team will be stronger.

Re: Fall Novice mirror @ Northwestern (10/1/2011)

I guess what bothers me more than the eligibility, is the mentality of the Coaches who would rather amass Ws then help true novices improve. I left all my starters from Nationals at home, and took the kids who may need an opportunity to shine. The good news for us is that those kids rose to the chal...

Re: Fall Novice mirror @ Northwestern (10/1/2011)

First, let me say I thought the tournament was very well run, mostly on time, and had GREAT Staffers/Moderators. However, whatever the "rules" I would have like Coaches to take the "Novice" spirit more to heart. I actually brought new Varsity players, or B team players that I wan...

Re: Torrey Pines Quizbowl Database

We LOVE this, it is a great tool. I have a question though. We can run it fine at school on Firefox, I can run it at home on Google Chrome, but students are having trouble running it at home if they have internet explorer. Are we doing something wrong? Is this something that can be addressed? Thank ...
