Re: I found the creator of Vanderbilt ABC

I worked at or TD'ed more than a dozen ABC's between 1992 and 1999. I can also answer a lot of questions anyone might have.

Re: 2013 HSNCT discussion

I did think, though, that the questions got progressively more difficult, even during the prelims. I'd be interested in seeing the eventual data to see if this was a trend with everyone, or just the perception of my teams. This was not our intent; we would like all 27 rounds to be as close to consi...

Auburn won the very first Trash tournament back in 1993.

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

I was surprised about the interrupts - I thought more negs would cause fewer questions to be read each match, but that line slopes upward more steeply than any of the others. This is because once a team has negged the other team, if they're not trying to power vulch, will wait until the full questi...

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

I excluded 7 matches where I found a team had a PPB over 30 Please send us a list of these so we can check the scoresheets and make appropriate corrections. I didn't keep track of which rounds these were from. Winner Score Stats Loser Score Stats P TU I B PPB P TU I B PPB TUH La Crosse Logan 190 0 ...

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

And while I only glanced over round 1, I will say that low ppb by one or both teams correlated strongly with low TUH from the data I saw. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a weaker correlation between PPB disparity and low TUH. If you know you're TJ 2005 playing Podunk Remedial Prison High, you...

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

I don't know what NAQT's plan is, but I would be interested in getting a summary report of my evaluations. I'm always willing to hear feedback and improve my performance.

Re: more missing pages from the NAQT results archive

Fixed; thank you! You're welcome. :) I remember that tournament being very frustrating for a lot of reasons. We were hosting it, but not running it. I knew going in that it was my very last tournament in college, and I wanted to have the Hollywood ending that never happened. The question set was mu...

Re: Qbhistory: High school classes & where are they now (<1998)

Vanderbilt also held a series of extremely large tournaments (on the order of 100 teams) twice a year which had a draw bigger than local tournaments (if not a truly national one); my memory of the questions, heard only in practices and never in Nashville, is dim, but I suspect they were also interm...

Re: Ask a Harvest Bowl survivor and ACF co-founder anything

It occurs to me that this thread is as good a place as any to post an explanation of why ACF games currently feature 20 tossups, as I'm not sure I've ever related this anecdote. Back in the day -- where "the day" is roughly the late '70s/early '80s -- quizbowl tournaments in the southeast...

Re: Philly Experiment?

It could very roughly be said that the Philly Experiment was to Tennessee Masters (among summer tournaments of that era) what ICT now is to ACF nationals. Or that was the perception at the time, though if we were to look back at the questions now it would likely be hard to discern much of a differe...

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

1) I think it's very possible that this year the average number of tossups answered per round is somewhat up from previous years. If so, more bonuses are read. Agreed. It was rare for me to have two tossups in a round that went unanswered. I think I maxed at 4 and that was for a 2XX v 2XX match-up ...

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

(1) We found very few moderators on day one capable of finishing a packet, even with IMSA (and sometimes our opponent also) putting up a lot of powers and playing fast. I can only guess that, with slower-playing teams, a lot of rounds did not hear enough tossups. We never had a bad moderator, but a...

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

Seriously, this thing wasn't caught earlier? What thing? DeWitt playing under fake names starting in Round 10? The stat room figured it out immediately, but there isn't much of a way to fix it...there's no way to go back and figure out who played under which alias except for asking the team itself....
