Re: On Exactitude in Science Writing
Bala, I don't meant this to be condescending, bu you haven't edited any packet submission tournaments to know anything about what new writers do and don't do. I hope that if you're ever science editor, you receive the same tossup on packets and Code Division Multiple Access that I did, and you come...

Re: On Exactitude in Science Writing
It is the job of the editor to determine the cluing order and whatnot, as well as what is relevant information and what is not. Raj, a number of your critiques strike me as originating from a position of naivety....It is a poor place for new writers to pull ideas from, but it is a fine place for ex...

Re: On Exactitude in Science Writing
Ike, you seem to like making giant strawmen out of anything anyone says. It's not the case that editors are going out of their way to include this nonstandard terminology in their tossups. So again, this seems kind of obvious. Yes. No one was ever suggesting this that editors are "going out of ...

Re: On Exactitude in Science Writing
Personal class notes. These are especially pernicious because they give the illusion of accuracy and unambiguousness. Another reason why this can be bad if you don't look up the clue is that professors very often make up terms for convenience, that are not "real" terms and are used only i...

Re: Specific Question Discussion
Can I see the boolean expressions tossup? 14. A function for simplifying these structures in double exponential time first finds all of its prime implicants and neglects “don’t care” terms. The Quine–McCluskey algorithm simplifies these expressions, which can also be simplified through a refinement...

I'm not sure exactly what is meant by validation, but perhaps this code will be helpful (just in case you forgot some cases).

Re: A few computer science questions reviewed
@Cody - I agree with your points. @Ike - I'd like to hear which ones you disagree with, if you have time. Most of these to me, seem to be factual inaccuracies rather than stylistic choices. is the OP just going through stuff in the past to catalogue a list of inaccuracies? Yes, this was the task pos...

A few computer science questions reviewed
A few criticisms of questions in the very small part of computer science I know about. In general, I think the problem is that writers tend to be imprecise or like to reword theorems/statements, but often introduce critical errors while doing so. Also, if the writer does not know too much about a su...

Great job on the UI design and fast searching! I also really like the answerline feature, must have taken a while to do that.

Re: quizbowl and technology: a proposal
Jerry, is that in EST? Also, yes. User interface/experience is not my strong suit (as you can tell by the extensive bootstrap theming). I'm going to work on that soon, I have a lot of advice from the moderators at WeST (which we used Abacus for - statistics at http://abacusquizbowl.com/loaded/3 by t...

Abacus source is at https://bitbucket.org/rajksvn/abacus, and I pushed to production, so you should be able to look at the master branch and work on http://abacusquizbowl.com/ instead of the development version. There's a few areas that need still need significant cleanup. Particularly, the tourname...

Re: Automatic Live Standings
This looks pretty cool - I like the color coding. Unfortunately, I don't think many statskeepers regularly update their hsquizbowl database during the tournament, but rather just once after the tournament (that's how most tournaments work in SoCal anyway). A question about your app - does it read di...

Re: Does quizbowl need a public Ginseng-analogue?
I'd love to see something similar replicated and integrated with a hypothetical suite of software, particularly if it were also browser-accessible. This is getting somewhat off-topic, but I do have software like this almost completed and integrated with Abacus. Features remote statistics upload and...

Re: Does quizbowl need a public Ginseng-analogue?
I'd be willing to help with this project and maybe provide hosting. Another advantage of having XML templates is that other software (Quinterest, Protobowl, etc.) can easily parse the packets for questions and answers - I believe Kevin of Protobowl is working on a public parsed packet repository rig...

Abacus 1.1 is here! New features include variable number of players per team, locally saving and loading round statistics, and smart handling of tossups heard per player. As always, report bugs or give suggestions at the 'Report Bug' link at the top right or just post here. Don't forget to read the ...

Re: Abacus | A web application for quizbowl moderators
I tried out some packets earlier and it seemed like each time you inputed points for a question, the packet would jump to the top of the other section, not the one last read (i.e. input a tossup, it goes to the top of the bonuses page and vice versa). Obviously this is an annoying problem if you're...

The issue is now fixed, but at the cost of the ability to upload doc(x) files. It will be re-added within the next week or two but in the meantime, please convert your documents to PDFs before using Abacus. The files are not uploaded anywhere else other than the Abacus server as of now. I'm not sure...
