Re: LOST I - 4/9/2016, SCOP MS [Litchfield, IL]

Due to a very unfortunate series of events, I was unable to make it to the tournament. However, David (my co-host) said it went very well. Congratulations to Next Gen on their impressive performance. Stats are here . Thanks to Kristen for the upload. I'd also like to give a huge shoutout to all of t...

Re: LOST I - 4/9/2016, SCOP MS [Litchfield, IL]

We are one week out and we are very excited! We have 16 teams (not bad for an area of the state where the Saturday tournament is almost nonexistent) and everything is coming together.

Re: Illinois '14-'15

Huge congrats to the Illinois teams who once again represent our state well on the national level. Particularly to IMSA for having almost a perfect 50% power rate across the board, making my eyes happy. Oh yeah, and 4th place is pretty cool too I guess.

Re: On Introducing Good Quizbowl

First off, thank you everyone for the advice and keep it coming if you have it. The main reasons for the house-write are the desires for some good experience and our MS's budget is extremely tight so we were looking to maximize profits for them. However, we are are not totally opposed to hosting a m...

On Introducing Good Quizbowl

I, having a passion for quizbowl, am pained frequently at the horrific nature of the local middle school circuit and have been longing to try and bring some change. I've just been approved to run a tournament next year (after being snubbed for this year) and I have some questions regarding introduci...

Re: IHSA 2015

I seemed to find myself less mad at this year's set, but that was probably just cause I lowered my expectations to a more realistic level. A lot of it was pretty appalling. Perhaps the most frustrating part were the multiple hoses. Math, as always, was pretty questionable.

Re: Maintaining High Levels of Mental Stamina?

Taking the advice given in the last thread, I've found the water/walking/exercise between rounds seems to help, though the biggest impact is just a good night's sleep and breakfast. I tried the almost dangerous levels of caffeine and it had so little effect it was almost laughable and I don't even c...

2A: U-Lab is the team to beat, and Macomb or Litchfield are the only teams that could. Not too sure about this. Newman CC is the highest ranked team in that division, and having played or seen play all of the teams you mentioned, I feel confident in saying that they are the favorite going in. Of co...

Re: Masonics 2015

My apologies if it sounded like I was undermining Fremd, bashing Auburn, or anything else of the sort. I know both are excellent teams and, seeing the results, was curious on how it happened. "Quite an upset" probably were not the words I was looking for.

Re: Illinois '14-'15

Throwing in my two cents here from a non-elite/from Chicagoland (which for downstaters is everything north of Peoria) point of view. I think the answer to this is much simpler than has been presented. People either enjoy quizbowl and improving, or they don't. Having "super players" doesn't effect wh...

I'm just looking at the tournament IHSSBCA tournament calendar and I can't help but notice the lack of dates. Is there a reason we are down around 10 or so tournaments? It's still a bit early, but there were more tournaments listed on September 23rd of last year than there are now (according to arch...

Re: Illinois '13-'14

Some facts from the SSNCT: Litchfield was the highest placing team with a 4th place finish. Of the seven IL teams, Westmont was the only team not to make the playoffs, missing them by only one game. We had more top-10 finishers than any state with three: Litchfield, Cumberland, and Macomb (Additiona...

How on earth does the 3-way tiebreaker work? I can come up with no possible way in which Carterville gets put third in pool 1 of Class A. Per IHSA rules, you throw out the game against the common opponent, and only look at scores between teams in the circle of death. Carterville had 350 Urbana U-Hi...

Re: Illinois '13-'14

Some thoughts from the Springfield tournament: Dunlap was the dark horse of the tournament, obtaining second after some solid play and a surprise win over Springfield. But their 16.67PPB (4th) for the day isn't that impressive. Jackson played well, claiming the top individual spot at 122PPG, but wha...

Staying Alert

As more of obscure theory, how do you stay sharp during tournaments? I play on a team with literally no knowledge of computer science. So I was wondering what resources on computer science you would recommend to get a grasp on the area. I'm not looking to become an expert in the subject, just anything that will allow me to answer a lot of common questions.

One example of the "swing" that stuck out to me was the geography pairs in the final. On the second bonus (Angola/DRC/Namibia), DRC was meant to be a hard part, but a sentence was added that (to me) made it a second easy part. The one that stood out to me was the 3rd part of the Brothers Karamazov ...
