Re: ACF Nationals 2015 Discussion

If Omar Bongo or Hastings Banda has now risen to greater quizbowl fame than Dave Dacko, something is very wrong in the land of Oz. Maybe that means Dave Dacko is now "shadow canon"? If so, I'm glad I wrote on him. I don't have any special knowledge of David Dacko's degree of canoninity. W...

Re: ACF Nationals 2015 Discussion

Also, just cause I'm me and I have to say things like this - David Dacko is so not hard. He's in the same tier of African presidents as Nyerere or Kaunda, and above the tier that includes people like Bongo or Banda. Dacko is a staple of the canon. Very uncontroversial answer choice to my mind. Davi...

Re: George Oppen @ Columbia University (2/21/15)

I love the idea that we tied for the most powers in the field while going 4-6, but I'm afraid it is just that- an idea. I have us with only 3 (or maybe four, my scorekeeping is not very good) powers in round 4, as opposed to 10 (!!!).

Re: George Oppen @ Columbia University (2/21/15)

I'm in the area and might be interested in playing this on Saturday... any update on what teams look like or if there's space for a (bad) free agent? We currently have only three players on our team (and already have a non-student, so no need to worry about fee increases). This sounds good (of cour...

This will be more around 10 and it will be 10/10 +maybe some extra bonuses I had written, rather than 20/20 but it is still happening.

I'm writing a 20/20 packet on modern East Asia for CLEAR and am planning on reading/"playtesting" it Friday evening around 9,30 EST.

Re: ACF Nationals 2013 Discussion

I'll admit I'm not aware of a law specifically saying "the cult of reason is the official religion of France" - however as it was a religion organized by the people running France at the time, who used the levers of state power to promote it to the exclusion of other competing religions, ...

Re: ACF Nationals 2013 Discussion

Cult of Reason : I can't believe this question hasn't been more complained about. This amounts to a joke question in ACF Nationals and a mockery of the idea that religion is a quizbowl-worthy subject. Oh, you buzzed on the description of rationalizing iconography with Cult of the Supreme Being? FUC...

Re: ACF Nationals 2013 Discussion

-I'd really liked to have seen tossups where a description is acceptable to mention this (like Swiss Catholics). This was a problem not only in a couple religion tossups but also in history; the tossup on comfort women required that exact term, but the tossup on atomic bomb survivors didn't require...

Re: ACF Nationals 2013 Discussion

This a minor point that doesn't relate to much of anything, but I found the contrast between the gun violence and Myanmar bonuses an interesting example of the challenges present in constructing current events bonuses (and many, many other bonuses I'm sure, but I don't know as much about other topic...

Re: Writing Good Current Events Questions

The tricky thing about policies (this is purely from experience answering questions, but currents events is the closest thing I have to a specialty, so this topic interested me) is that it can be difficult to write a clue that a) points to a unique answer, rather than to a variety of potential peopl...
