Re: Alabama 2016-2017

national rankings are out again. Hoover is #36, James Clemens #59. I might've missed someone scanning through the list, but I think those were to only 2 Alabama teams. Barring some upsets, I think those 2 will face off for the state title in April. I believe both teams could make the playoffs at naq...

Re: Alabama 2016-2017

Stats are up for LAMP. I didn't get to see any varsity teams as I was with our JV. I'm not really surprised by anything from looking at the stats except for sylacauga's success with only 3 people.

Re: Alabama 2016-2017

This weekend's tournament at West Point was very good. We didn't have any major problems and finished early. I think our varsity team had a tough time this weekend and didn't play to their full potential. Although we finished second without one of our best players (Rishik Hombal) we left a lot of po...

Re: Alabama 2015-16

Congrats to all the Alabama teams on their performances at nationals, especially Spain Park for being the first bama team to make the playoffs in a while. Both Hoover teams went 5-5 again (this is like the 5th year in a row that our A team has gone .500 and this is the 3rd time we've had 2 teams go ...

Re: 2016 NAQT HSNCT: Congratulations Hunter!

This was my 6th HSNCT as a player/coach and I can happily say that this was the most efficient and pleasurable one I've attended. We didn't have to wait long between matches like sometimes in the past and I thought the hotel layout was great. Sometimes in Atlanta and Chicago it felt like we walked a...

Re: Alabama 2015-16

I have now had multiple players ask about having a NASAT team from Alabama this year. The tourney is at UKentucky, which isn't that bad a drive, really, and it is really time we consider making this happen. Lee Henry and I have dIscussed this in the past, and I think that between the two of us we w...

Re: Alabama 2015-16

I get that your sponsor is upset about there being tournaments on days of testing, but between the SAT and ACT roughly two weekends a month are already scheduled for tests. It's hard enough trying to find locations and enough people to run decent tournaments for state, and sometimes the only availab...

Re: Alabama 2014-15

I know these teams are planning on going to nationals: Springwood, LAMP, Huntsville, West Point, Cordova, and Hoover (two teams). Did I leave anybody out or is anybody else hoping to get in on standby? From what I've seen from them this year, I really think Hoover, Springwood, and West Point could h...

Re: Alabama 2014-15

Stats for the state tournament on the ASCA page. There was a lot of parity this year; I wouldn't have thought the playoffs would have turned out the way they did. Congrats to all of the state qualifiers, playoff teams, and the Final Four. This year was really special for us

Re: Improving a Team (For Coaches)

I was wondering if anyone advice for transitioning middle school players into the high school quiz bowl. I'll have a couple of pretty good middle schoolers moving into 9th grade next year, but I'm a little unsure about how much to throw at them when the new year starts. I don't want to discourage th...

Re: Alabama 2014-15

SCOP MS 5 was used at the tournament; it's difficulty was somewhere between an A and standard IS set. ASCA rules were used but the high school teams did not do worksheets.

Re: What defines a team captain?

In our program the captain always had a skull insignia on their uniform (we're the buccaneers). I spent most of my freshman year as captain of our JV B team, but right at the end of the year our coach made another player captain. I didn't get the insignia on my uniform (no one did in my year) I took...

Re: Alabama 2014-15

I thought the Gadsden tournament this past weekend was run really well; the readers were pretty competent and we got out at a very reasonable time. I didn't get a chance to see any varsity matches as I followed the JV all day. One of our JV teams played horribly after lunch and complained a little a...

Re: Improving a Team (For Coaches)

Thanks for this awesome guide. I played quiz bowl in high school, and while I'm in college I'm coaching the JV teams. I think our coach does a great job of mixing in fun when he can (ex. wearing bowling shirts or football jerseys as team uniforms, creative pool names at tournaments, and proper amoun...

Re: Alabama 2014-15

To facilitate the tryout process, maybe each team or school could be limited to sending one player for try outs. I do agree with Lee that no player should be prevented from trying out by financial situations. My concern with the all star teams would be finding an ideal composition of players. A good...

Re: Alabama 2014-15

Over the past few weeks there have been some interesting results. Nobody has really separated themselves at the top, but Spain Park is playing the most consistently with great performances at CCA and LAMP. I know Gadsden and Hoover had some incomplete teams at those tournaments but Spain Park, West ...

Not sure if anybody's mentioned it yet, but An Incomplete Education is great. Covering art, lit, history, mythology, philosophy, Econ, just about every topic is at least highlighted. Book's also pretty witty too

Re: Alabama 2014-15

I do wish that the folks at Alabama would have been explicit as to what constitutes a "JV" team. Apparently Indian Springs had some upper-classmen on the JV team, including at least one senior. I'm not disparaging ISS, as I learned that they were forthcoming about this and were allowed to...

Re: Alabama 2013-14

I noticed that rule but it never really affected us because we were usually undefeated and had the highest ppg. This sounds like a good change, but win/loss record has its disadvantages too. A high overall PPG shows that a team is consistent and scored high in every game. A undefeated record is good...
