(Of course, I know Katherine was helping us run it rather than playing... it would be different had her team actually wanted to participate.) Well, our team wanted to come, but conflicts came up with most of the team. And I normally don't have that thick of an accent, it just comes out when I'm rea...

I'd like to thank Dan Greenstein, Dr. Chuck, and everyone else at PACE for running such an excellent tournament. I had a whole lot of fun as a moderator and hope to come back next year.

I think a lot of whether or not a team goes to a tournament is dependent upon the coach--if the coach has a conflict, then the team is out of luck (unless they can find another teacher to come along with the team). Other times, the students themselves have conflicts or a lack of interest in tourname...

Apparently the brackets were chosen completely at random. Now, the mathematical definition of "random" and the common definition of "random" aren't exactly the same, which might explain the skewedness of the brackets.

Walter Williams did OK but our team had fun. I can't eat a whole lot during a quiz bowl tournament or it makes me sick, so I enjoyed the bagels after we lost to Cary Academy A ;) I agree that the tourmanemt was very well-run. I think it's the first tournament I've been to that was AHEAD of schedule!

Cary Academy is a really nice school, I had always wondered why they didn't show up at quiz bowl events.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the Red and White bowl this Saturday!

Guys might have slightly faster reflexes, but I think that confidence, knowledge base, and ability will serve a player much better in the long run than a fast finger.

Also, the fact that I play unhealthy amounts of Tetris would probably make up for any differences in reflex time.

This is hearsay, but my coach tells me that at the Science Bowl competition last year in North Carolina, their opposing team had a math bonus. They got the math bonus wrong, and then the captain protested that the moderator had read the question wrong, because "If she had read the question corr...

To recruite girls: A) Don't make it seem like you're trying to recruite girls. Many of us consider that offensive. B) Don't have your team be overtly exclusive to a gender. I.e. If your guy team wears ties, stop. It makes things feel like you are unwelcome as a girl for changing things. C) Don't di...

I was the only girl on quiz bowl my sophomore year, my junior year there were a few but the starting players were me and three guys. This year, two other girls and I go into competition with the rest of the team. Girls tend to be a little bit more buzzer-shy. I know one thing that scares a lot of pe...

Practice. Practice, practice, and more practice. I'm afraid there really isn't a "secret" to buzzing in faster, you just have to do it and try not to neg too much in the process. If you know the answer, don't waste time by second guessing yourself, but then again the question might be a ho...

Predictions for 2006?

Now that 2005 has withered in its pride, what are your predictions for 2006, quiz-bowl related or otherwise? I'm thinking the North Carolina circuit will be very busy; I've got something lined up for almost every Saturday in March. And along that thread, hopefully much progress will be made ...

I cast my vote for Dr. Chuck. Most moderators around here take things at a leisurely pace and fumble over words, so the speed and clarity was rather refreshing (for the one match I've played where Dr. Chuck was the moderator).

For me, it could go either way. Fast moderators are irritating when I can't understand a word they're saying, but slow moderators are even worse when they stumble over words. However, if both the fast moderator and the slow moderator are enunciating well, I'd rather have a fast moderator because it ...

One thing I've noticed about the Shakespeare questions is that they focus almost entirely on the tragedies, with some mention of the histories and almost none of the comedies. True, some of the comedies are obscure, but so are some of the tragedies. (Timon of Athens, anyone?)
