Re: Math Monstrosity - General Discussion

I suffer from the "I'd be happy to write for this tournament, but I'd much rather play it" issue. Yeah, I enjoyed playing these packets so much (even in a super-informal reading over discord) that I'd be loathe to miss MM2 if we were able to hold a proper UK mirror, but if necessary, I sh...

Re: Imaginary Landscape No. 4

Will the set be available to hold a UK mirror? After the very successful mirror of IL3, I am certain there will be the interest to play this too.

Re: Math Monstrosity on the Cloud (June 18th)

As much as I was looking forward to playing this, due to a change in plans beyond my control, I'm afraid I won't be able to attend after all. Apologies to any tentative teammates/opponents who were looking forward to witnessing the Mother Of All Negstorms.

Assuming I'm actually available for this, I'm a free agent. If you wanna be on a team with someone that refers to this tournament as "Maths Monstrosity", and will potentially neg >50% of the questions, hit me up.

Re: UK Player Poll 2017: Now With More Tweed

Since only one Warwick person made the list, I'll controversially provide some flavour for everyone from Warwick that got votes: Ben Salter I like to (ambitiously) think I’m in the UK top 2 for maths and music, and can fraud science against teams that don't have a scientist. Unfortunately, I've gott...

Re: Reading old Imaginary Landscape packets in the QB Discor

Thanks Ophir for doing this! I wanted to add that I will be reading a so-called Music Mafia Tournament (MMT) immediately after tomorrow's reading of IL2, consisting of 30 powermarked vanity tossups ranging from the Baroque to the present day. The difficulty on these will range from around Nats-leve...

Re: 2017 ACF Regionals at Warwick (18/2/17)

This happened. It was great. After clearing the field in the prelims, Oxford A then lost to both Oxford B and Cambridge A, so that after 12 games we had 3 teams on 10/2. By virtue of their higher PPG, Oxford A got a ticket to the final, whilst Oxford B and Cambridge A had to have a play-in game to d...

2017 ACF Regionals at Warwick (18/2/17)

Hello! I am delighted to announce that the UK mirror of ACF Regionals 2017 will take place at the University of Warwick, on the 18th of February, 2017. The tournament will probably be held either in the Humanities or Social Sciences department, and registration will begin at 9:30 for a 10:00 start. ...

Re: 2016 Terrapin General Discussion

Though I managed to miss half of the tournament, I too found this very enjoyable. Aside from the odd dodgy question as mentioned in the other thread, I was relatively happy with the questions on the small number of things I know enough about to comment on. I particularly enjoyed the maths, which see...

Re: 2016 ACF Fall general discussion

Also I believe there was a repeat of Kanye or at least on things related to life of Pablo. Actually, this was a Briticisation error - the draft packets had (I believe) no mention of Kanye, so we changed the last part of the "Chance the Rapper" bonus to be on The Life of Pablo. Kanye then ...

Re: 2016 ACF Fall general discussion

I agree with much of what has been said here, and more. I should caveat this post by saying that several of my qualms may not have been present in the set that was sent to other sites. As per usual, we planned on Briticising the set, which meant we required the a draft of the set a few days before t...

So this happened, and despite a few fairly hefty logistical issues, it ran pretty well (much credit is due to the moderators, whose ability to remain calm and adapt to the less-than-ideal situation was admirable). Congratulations to Cambridge Catesby for clearing the field with style, and to Stanley...

I might be misremembering, but I think the bonus set on "The Wanderers" didn't have "Peredvizhniki" listed as an acceptable alternative (I'm fairly sure they're the same thing). Was this the case, or was it just moderator error?

Could I see the tossup on integrating over time? Our opponents negged with "integration" fairly early and couldn't figure out the time part; I don't remember the exact wording but I'd like to make sure the first clue was uniquely identifying. I and at least one other person ended up doing...

The algebraic connectivity of a graph can be found by calculating one of these for the graph Laplacian. If I recall correctly, there were 2 bonus sets on fluid dynamics, both of which used "incompressibility" as an answer line. I suppose this isn't necessarily wrong on principle, but it did strike me as somewhat strange. On an unrelated note, would it be possible to see the tossup on _eigenv...
