Re: Help studying

Lastly, I would suggest notetaking AND flashcarding. It might be cumbersome to read books/Wikipedia/packets, take notes, and then make flashcards from your notes, but I find that multistep process to be helpful in digesting and learning all that information (some people can just read stuff and reca...

Re: ACF Nationals discussion

I thought this set was consistently entertaining--although I was totally wiped Saturday night and several tossups went dead every packet even in 2nd bracket, 18 rounds of quizbowl over two days went by surprisingly quickly. I really appreciated the drive to include material outside the typical canon...

Re: Thanks and General Discussion

What was the distribution of subcategories for Other Arts? I only remember hearing 1/1 of both photography and (non-2010s) film at the Penn State mirror--were there more hiding in the unread packets?

Re: Specific Questions and Errors

Was the tossup on blood type unique for ABO typing? I negged with "Rhesus factor" (which I don't think fits the earlier clues) near the part about immunoglobulins crossing the placenta, but I'm curious as to exactly how wrong I was. ETA: For the purpose of raising a larger point, I'd like to mention...

[10] This poem, whose speaker tells a “celestial choir” that “Columbia’s scenes of glorious toil I write,” commands: “Proceed, great chief, with virtue on thy side, / Thy ev’ry action let the Goddess guide.” ANSWER: “ To His Excellency George Washington ” [by Phillis Wheatley] We missed out on this...

Re: 2017 ACF Regionals - specific-question discussion

Just perused a couple of packets, and I just wanted to say that the set is very polished in terms of having an easily readable format, generally comprehensive answerlines, and helpful (but not obstructive) pronunciation guides. A very small thing I saw while looking through our and Oxford B's packet...

Re: 2017 ACF Regionals - specific-question discussion

Can I see the exact phrasing of the "vibrations" tossup, especially the lead-in about PQR branches? I might be remembering wrong, but I think that part was more applicable to transitions between vibrational states than to the act of vibrating itself. I'm not sure there's really a fundamental differ...

Re: Eyes VIII discussion

I really enjoyed the set! Just a couple of small things that I thought might warrant a look at for future mirrors: 1. The tossup on works commissioned by Güell has a picture of some stones as the second or third picture in the tossup (before the butt bench) that IIRC literally say "Parc Güell" on th...

Re: PB 2016: Specific Question Discussion

Similarly, the James Russell Lowell question uses "he" (or "his"? I don't remember) to refer to the author of "Skunk Hour," and then makes you prompt on "Lowell," presumably inducing some answers of "Robert." Can confirm that this happened at least once, causing much annoyance on the Harvard side. ...

Re: Transparency

I think it's more like tossups along the lines of "hm what's something you mine that you really wouldn't want to get in your water supply" This, but also dropping equator in power for the Coriolis force question (in addition to Jacob's regional thing). Maybe you don't mind someone buzzing off an ed...

Re: Specific Question Discussion (Penn Bowl 2015)

To explain why I ask, I and two (three?) other members of the team realized the event being described around where power ended, but two of us sat on it for a considerable time since we didn't remember the target's name. But the third player realized he could just buzz with "umbrella assassination,"...

Can I see tossups on Tibet, Urals, WWI, Netherlands, Hawaii, Afghanistan War, and Alexander the Great? For what it's worth, Fences was powered quite early in my room, although the team that got it had just read it in English class. Ishiguro is a tough answerline mainly because he isn't read much in high school, but I think that the tossup on him was very much gettable at the power mark (if not before...

Re: HFT IX @ Harvard (11/15/14)

In the email all staffers received a few days prior to HFT, bringing a computer to read questions was mentioned, albeit briefly. That being said, I don't think the availability of laptops would have been a issue at all had the reading snafu not occurred. The packets were sent out to the rest of the ...

Re: Errata

This one tripped me up when I read it: round 10, tossup 20, second to last sentence should read "loss of electrons," not "elections."
