Re: 2021 ACF Winter: Global Announcement (November 6)

The 2021 ACF Winter editors have offered to give feedback on packet submissions, and a Google form for requesting feedback has been emailed out to everyone who sent in a submission to Winter (using the email under which the team registered for Winter). We hope teams will find this useful! If you sub...

Re: 2021 ACF Winter - Specific Question Discussion

Last minor quibble is that the inclusion of a clue about the Bonferroni correction in the tossup on null hypotheses seemed very insider baseball and odd (unless my impression that this is a relatively minor technique that has blown up primarily in the forums-reading quizbowl community over the Terr...

2021 ACF Winter - Thanks and General Discussion

This is the general discussion thread for 2021 ACF Winter. Thanks so much to everyone who played the tournament, and thanks especially to all the staffers who volunteered their time to make this weekend a success. By my rough count, we had 182 teams play ACF Winter and 78 submit half-packets, both v...

Re: Teammate Appreciation Thread

I’m not his teammate anymore, but Matthew Lehmann is an eminently delightful person and would be well-deserving of some “nicest person in quiz bowl” votes if that ever happens again. Ben Miller, Grant Li, and Alston Boyd were an exceptionally fun group of people to play with last year, and I of cour...

2021 ACF Winter: Global Announcement (November 6)

This is the official announcement for 2021 ACF Winter, which will be held on November 6th, 2021 . Like last year’s set, this set will target a difficulty halfway between ACF Fall and ACF Regionals. The tournament will be head edited by me (Tim Morrison). The subject editors will be: Ethan Ashbrook: ...

Re: 2021 ACF Regionals - Specific Question Discussion

Referring to Sandi as her half-brother in the Wide Sargasso Sea tossup kind of threw me off, since Antoinette refers to him as her cousin throughout the book. I'm not entirely clear on their exact relation, but it seems like from a quick command+f in the book that he's the son of Alexander Cosway, ...

Re: 2021 ACF Regionals - Specific Question Discussion

Could I see the tossup on Pangloss? I buzzed second line with Candide because Candide also goes with Pangloss to see the dervish and participates in the conversation with him. (The Wikipedia summary makes out Candide to be the most involved in that conversation, though admittedly in the book he onl...

Re: 2021 ACF Regionals - Specific Question Discussion

I, and at least a few other people I've spoken to, found the Turing tossup confusingly worded. My teammate buzzed and negged with Searle at the same place I would have, shortly before Searle's name was said. I had just studied the Chinese Room thought experiment with what I thought was a reasonable...

I really enjoyed this set! Echoing some previous posts, I was a big fan of the expanded Math/CS/Stats/etc. distribution and would love to see more sets go in that direction. I’m sure I’m forgetting some stuff, but the questions on ensemble classifiers, the Dartmouth workshop, web scraping, numerical...

I really enjoyed this tournament - thanks so much to John, Wonyoung, and Noah for all their hard work! The questions were lots of fun to play, and even the ones I knew nothing about were interesting to listen to. The daily format was a fantastic idea and kept me a lot more excited about the tourname...

Re: Question-Specific Discussion for Popular Music

Even as someone who basically just twiddled my thumbs during the classical questions (which I’m sure were great), I had a really fun time playing this set, so thanks a lot to Wonyoung for all his hard work! My main nitpick was the album issue, which Wonyoung already brought up. I guess the biggest t...

Re: New England (CT, MA, VT, NH) 2015-16

Phillips Academy Andover would like to reserve April 9th for the NAQT Massachusetts State Championships. Do you know if this tournament is/might potentially be open to non-Massachusetts teams? I believe NAQT's policy is that out-of-state teams are allowed (at the host's discretion) to attend anothe...

Put Bishop Guertin down as a maybe. Also, just so I have somewhat of an idea, what does the difficulty level of the competition tend to be at ACF Fall relative to, say, HFT?

Is this tournament only for Massachusetts teams, or are teams from states without an NAQT championship allowed to enter a state finals for another state? NH does not have its own NAQT championship.

Bishop Guertin would like to commend and thank everyone at E.O. Smith (and presumably UConn) for a very well-run and enjoyable tournament.
