Hey I'd just like to clarify that while we're from the same school district, there are two separate Downingtown schools that regularly play quizbowl (East and STEM). I think you probably meant Downingtown STEM in the poll since they'll be much more dominant than us this year, so it might be useful t...

Not much interesting, but I play violin and was a dancer for a long time (mostly classical ballet, so I still have a ton of random French terms floating around in my head). Re: Neg Control

One tip I've heard is waiting to buzz in until one clue after you first think you know the answer. Of course, there are times when this might not work as well (for example, the other team could end up beating you to the buzzer).

Re: How to attract new members

My school was in a similar situation a few years back, where over half our team (and most of our scoring) graduated. I think it’s important to show the fun, social aspect of playing quiz bowl in the beginning, so that people will actually want to come to things. Try to befriend younger non-players s...

The team hasn't been to a good national tournament since NSC in 2014 and didn't go to any nats at all last year. I'm pretty sure the school knew that the field at NTAE was ridiculously small both years that we went, but the entire thing with it being at Disney and the $$ prizes probably made it seem...

Re: Coach issues

The problem at our school is that the administration is really attached to him, since the team won the state championship twice when it was on non-pyramidal questions and they think he's a great coach because of that. There's this weird loop where the better we do, the more credit the school gives t...

Coach issues

A few months ago, I posted a question about academic team tryouts and got some helpful responses about how we should let the team naturally narrow itself down instead of artificially cutting its size. I suggested this to my coach, but he still decided to write his own “tryout” test which was made up...

Re: Tryouts?

Thanks for the responses! We'll definitely keep them in mind for the upcoming school year. I think we had previously limited the team because our coach makes us wear these off-white sweaters for our (non-pyramidal) local league, and there are only 15 sweaters. That's definitely not a good reason to ...

Tryouts?

At our school, we are fortunate to have a lot of support for our academic team and many students (30-40) each year who want to join. My coach usually has a written test of a bunch of facts to choose around 14 or 15 people for the team. However, I feel like this method of narrowing the team down ends...
