Re: AMA about the 2011 NSC & the evolution of PACE

Since Ankit and Joe have been the only other players to comment on the 2011 NSC, a tournament I thought I had finally suppressed from my memory, I figured I'd chip in. I was basically serving as an alternate for our B team at the NSC as I was far better on NAQT than ACF style questions so it was ext...

Re: Harvard Fall Tournament XIII Available for Mirrors (2018-19)

So I sent a PM about this, but I never got a response. Is there any more information on the Minnesota mirror of HFT? If it is being held in the Minneapolis metro we would be interesting in attending, but we would like to know which weekend the tournament is likely to be held on.

Re: Player tossup etiquette

Just curious, how would you buzzer fake? I have definitely met players (in Certamen, not quizbowl) who automatically buzz when they hear someone else buzz. Unlike quizbowl buzzers, Certamen machines recognize the first buzz on each team (so up to 3 basically simultaneous buzzes for 3 teams), and it...

I assume you are talking about the "You Gotta Know" guides, not the frequency or Power Up materials they produce, as those are a commercial product. If that's the case, you can go directly to NAQT's web site and use your right click to download the pages in question. There were ACE Camp S...

Re: 2018 HSNCT discussion

About this baseball bonus. It was played in Round 26, which featured a total of nine games. Just PM someone from each match to get the conversion data if you really want to get to the bottom of it. Northview swept the bonus in the Northview-Stevenson game, although several of the Northview players a...

I don't really see how Dorman will be anywhere near the top 15 this season but I am happy to be proved wrong. I think I speak for the entire Dorman A-team when I say that we would love nothing more than to prove you wrong, Nick. I guess our game against you at HSNCT wasn't enough proof for you. You...

Re: List of NSC (2018) Side Events

An unimportant (but important to me...) side-note is that Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final is in DC on Saturday night, so I'll probably trek out to a bar in RTC to go watch it, if anyone would like to join, or even host a viewing in the NSC hotel bar. I would like to add another note about this. Wal...

Thanks for making the spreadsheet Vikshar. I'm very interested in seeing how the combined average sorts out all of the contenders for Top 25 spots at the national championships. I've got a question though. Additionally, HSNCT and NSC require different playing styles (HSNCT being very heavy on tossup...

Re: What is the Best Way to Tell How Good a Player Actually

It comes down to the player in the context of their team. The best player on a weak team, assuming they're decent, probably has a high PPG and a respectably, but low power ratio. What Ricky's saying could be true, but it's also possible the high power percentage player you're comparing them to is o...

Re: What is the Best Way to Tell How Good a Player Actually

Like Michael, I use powers to rate players. When I draft my preseason rankings each year, I look at how many powers each team is returning and then go from there (checking out B-team players, seeing if they were at full strength at nats, etc.). Sometime you see fourth scorers on top teams score some...

When I read about these changes, I read about them with some concern, particularly the part about the divided pool at the start of the tournament and the ability for the first 100 teams to select which grouping they will play in. I do not think many teams in the first 100 to register will opt for t...

I agree with Jakob here, and feel that schools that are in smaller circuits and thus play less teams will have less exposure than teams in larger circuits. One example I am familiar with is Lisgar.
