Re: Michigan '09-'10

What I remember from that "State Championship" when I played was something like 30% of the mathcomp being "calculate the albedo," usually to two decimal places. Those tournaments were the most infuriating thing of high school quiz bowl.

Re: Announcement: Ferdinand Tönnies Memorial Trash Tournament

I somehow finagled myself a job that starts the 27th at UChicago, so I'll go ahead and declare official free agency. I know a fair amount of rock music (esp. classic and indie), know a bit about movies, have decent general knowledge, and I'll make the claim that I know as much about King of the Hill...

False alarm, I was looking at QB Jr. rather than the real deal. Still, nothing from my years in the high school archive, though. At least I can watch my brothers.

Oh No! The archives only go back to 2006, the year after I graduated. My vanity and ego can't be boosted by watching myself in my heyday.

I guess the prospect of questions on 1950s novelty country music acts and kitty litter really appeals to the masses.

Depending on what I'm doing this summer (the details are nebulous at best), I may be able to make it down to staff CO/play Trash. I'll hold off on officially declaring free agency for now, but I thought I'd put it out there as a possibility.

Re: ACF Nationals discussion

To echo Andrew's sentiment about bonus difficulty, I'd like to know what the hell a Schrodinger's Cat bonus part was doing in a non-ACF Fall tournament. Given, I was on a team that had gaps in its knowledge one could drive a truck through whose conversion was around 10PPB, but it seems to me that if...

Re: ACF Regionals Discussion Thread

Point taken. I generally avoid doing this because I want to keep at least 2 tossups and 2 bonuses on the screen at once so I don't have to scroll all the time, which can hard with a small laptop screen. But it is really just a minor airing of grievances.

As someone who read rather than played, I'd like to point out of few issues: 1. Could we please stop putting cute messages to the readers in the answer space? The idea of a Brainbow process is pretty cool, but I don't need to find out about it while I'm reading a packet. Also, referring to the Ameri...

As per my earlier request, I still need contact info (e-mail and/or phone number) from the following schools. The point of this is to hopefully minimize unnecessary delays. I should probably state that unless I get vocal complaints opposing the move, I've decided to cap the tournament at Midnight on the 15th, that being the final packet deadline. If you've worked something out where you don't have to write a packet and haven't told me you're attending, then we might be...

I'd like to make a plea for buzzers/laptops (esp. buzzers). Something like 3 out of 4 of our buzzers are broken and the club laptop has died. Also, if I could request that teams e-mail me to confirm the number of teams they're sending when they know, that would be great.
Thanks

"The question is not who is going to let me, the question is who is going to stop me" Is there any evidence of ACF actually punishing people who do not provide trophies? Ok, so I'm wondering if any actual trophies have been given out at ACF events this year. I was just wondering if there was a conscious effort to put at least 1/0 Math into what seemed like nearly every packet. It certainly seemed that there was quite a bit of math. I'm not complaining in the least bit; in fact this is exactly the sort of science distribution ACF should use.

Re: Middle School QB help

As someone who played Middle School Quizbowl in rural Michigan (Corunna to be exact), I can say that "novice high school tournaments" pretty much don't exist, but I guess things could have changed since '98-'01. If things are run the same from when I was in school, schools generally play in leagues,...

Yeah, those stats are very very wrong. For example, Chicago B evidently only heard 60 questions and still managed to place third. Funny, because in a total of six rounds we anwered 78 tossups and had 16 negs. Unless someone decided to change from base 10 to base 20 arithmetic half way through, I don...
