Re: Georgia 2008-2009

The question on "The Lorax" was actually in the first round of the playoffs not in the second round. My team lost to Chattahoochee by 50 points in that round in a game that we could have won until the last question. The problem with "The Lorax" isn't even so much that it is trash, but that it is "li...

Re: Dorman "Season Ender" - 5/2/09 (Spartanburg, SC)

Central Gwinnett is definitely bringing one Varsity team and we are probably bringing one J.V. team as well. I will know for sure by the end of this week.

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

Eliott -- My reason for bringing up how easy the questions were had nothing to do with the final tournament standings. The exact reason that I mentioned the easy questions was because, unlike you apparently, I do NOT find it fun when the questions are so easy that teams can answer them in the first ...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

William brought up the HAVOC tournament as an "easy" tournament but, for the record, the HAVOC tournament questions were much, much more difficult than this year's J.V. State questions. In just one round of HAVOC, I see tossups on (1) My Last Duchess, (2) Center of Mass, (3) President Pro Tempore, (...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

J.V. questions are, by nature, easier than Varsity questions. That is as it should be. However, I don't see any reason for them ever to be as easy as the ones at Saturday's J.V. State tournament. This was basically a middle school set of questions consisting almost exclusively of information that 9t...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

I'm afraid that I have to agree with William here. These questions, while not necessarily poorly written, were far too easy. A few questions (one about Gandhi comes to mind) could have been answered by a not especially bright 5th grader. In my opinion, the tossup questions were easy and the bonus qu...

Re: Dorman "Season Ender" - 5/2/09 (Spartanburg, SC)

We attended this tournament last year, and there were certainly other teams there who seemed close to the novice level. Even if the questions might seem difficult for a truly novice team, it is unlikely that all of the games would be total blow-outs... nothing near the terrifying/scarring level... I...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

My point was not that this year's questions weren't easy, but that the last few year's questions have been easy as well. I looked back at the 2007 and 2008 playoff questions, and I believe that the 2009 Semifinals/Finals teams would have been able to convert all or most of them. I have actually beli...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

Over the past few weeks, our team has used numerous sets of questions from old Varsity State tournaments in practice. I did not see that much difference in difficulty between the past few year's sets and this year's set. The questions at Varsity State always seem fairly easy to me. The questions in ...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

Over the next few days, could someone please post a list of the teams that will be participating in next weekend's Varsity State tournament? I am specifically interested in AAAAA, but some of the smaller divisions might be interested also.

Thanks,

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

My team (Central Gwinnett) lost on a tiebreaker question to the Gwinnett Magnet School in the Round of 16. We were leading the entire game until the second to last question, when the Magnet School tied up the game on a math question. Unfortunately for us, the tiebreaker question was a science questi...

Re: Dorman "Season Ender" - 5/2/09 (Spartanburg, SC)

Central Gwinnett would like to come to this tournament (we came last year) but we heard this set of questions this past weekend at the Cedar Shoals tournament. I don't know how many Georgia teams would be planning to attend this event but most of the "usual suspects" (Chattahoochee, Brookwood, Walto...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

The final four were actually: (1) Dorman A (2) Alpharetta (3) Chattahoochee (4) Central Gwinnett B -- beat Russell in the playoffs then lost to Alpharetta Officially, according to the people running the tournament, Chattahoochee and Central Gwinnett B were tied for 3rd since they never played a cons...

In a comparison of Alpharetta's draw and Centennial's draw... yes, Alpharetta's draw was slightly harder. For the sake of those who weren't at the tournament, though, and who might be reading this board and interested for whatever reason -- Centennial actually played 3 teams who made the playoffs, n...

Re: Georgia 2007-2008

It seemed to me that the questions yesterday were quite a bit more difficult than the J.V. State questions have been the last couple of years. This is in no way a complaint or criticism, simply an observation. I am all for challenging questions. I just wondered if other teams also felt the questions...

Re: Georgia 2007-2008

One last point about Dorman B... they may have put two freshmen in instead of their regular starters. However, two of their regular starters (Freddy and Todd) were there and I am pretty sure that they are the strongest members of their team. And my understanding is that Dorman B got to the Finals on...

It should not be too big of a surprise that Central Gwinnett, Parkview and Grayson are somewhat down this year from last year. Central Gwinnett's entire Varsity team last year was Seniors and this year's Varsity team consists entirely of Juniors. Parkview's team last year was almost entirely Seniors...

I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this whole issue of "Early Losses=Advantage", but our school (Central Gwinnett) followed a similar path to Brindlee Mountain A. We started out a strong 4-1 and then lost 4 games in a row to end up 5-5. Our point total of 2310 was higher than 19 of the 6-4 teams ...

I agree that any team can be good with a devoted coach. However, I would love to know Dorman's "secret" as to how they ring in so fast. My team practices alot, studies quite a bit, has knowledge at least close to as extensive as Dorman (I believe), but can't seem to beat them at the buzzers. Dorman'...

Buzzer Technique

This may seem like a stupid question, but this is something that I have wondered for a while... I have noticed that with hand-held buzzer sets, some teams rather than holding the buzzer with one hand and using the thumb, instead hold the buzzer with one hand and then press the button using the index...

My team had an excellent time at the tournament also. The questions were at a perfect level for J.V. -- challenging but not ridiculously hard. I think the Dorman team at Gonzaga was their A team, but I've never seen a bad Dorman team. A win over ANY team from Dorman is an accomplishment.

I look forward to the Georgia Varsity State Tournament in March when my top 4 players will all be playing together.

We have participated in the Berry tournament for the past two years. Yes, the tournament (for whatever ...

Central Gwinnett A actually lost to Chattahoochee in the quarterfinal round at Dorman, the same team that Norcross lost to in the semis.
