I think that the reason that PACE and ACF have maintained better quality for so long is that their writers, rather than being out-of-touch career people who played in college ten years ago, are current students and players who are in touch with the current standards of good quizbowl. A-sets, because they are really just reused questions from NAQT TV tournaments, are short, frequently have poor pyrimidality, and sometimes contain answers that are ridiculous for novices: things like tossups on Jasper Johns or on the inventor of freeze-drying. Regular IS-Sets have little difference...

I think what a lot of people are missing in this thread is on of the most obvious things to do. Go to tournaments. This is probably the way i've grown the most as a player because not only do you learn things, but you also learn how to play. I would also advise you to go to any and all tournaments....

I actually don't object to Naren's plan, because this area has reached the point that the elite teams are considerably above everyone else, and differentiation of these teams tends to require more difficulty-- for example, the Penn tournament's final was excellently appropriate for the two competing...

I would gladly play in a Geography theme tournament. I do have to say, however, that a geography tournament can be made considerably more interesting with clues about polities' human geography as well as their physical features.

I have to agree with the comments about biographical clues: especially ones that are completely irrelevant and non-identifying. I don't give a damn if somebody's parents were coalminers or born in New Zealand. That information is deeply unhelpful, and, in a tossup with a character limit, takes space...

Upon further counting, with 15 teams it seems to me you could easily run a tournament with 2 8 team prelim pools (one with a bye) that play round robin, and then have the top 6 teams play another round robin, and then a one game final if the top 2 teams have tied records, an advantaged 2-of-3 final...

My only major complaint-- you grouped Tiberium in a Command and Conquer bonus about the Red Alert series. For shame, Mike, Tiberium doesn't appear in the Red Alert games. Some kind of ore is harvested instead.
