Probably because he is trying to massively improve his question quality or branch out into the collegiate game. Sad as it is, UCLA quizbowl is pretty much dead. We haven't really been able to recruit new people, and old people that once were able to come (including myself) no longer have the time during the week. We were lucky to get 5 people to a practice/meeting.

If David isn't able to host again next year, and people are willing to come out to Suffolk County, I would likely be able to host something like this again next year, just with a pool instead of the beach. Either way, something like this almost certainly will happen next year.

In 4th quarter it's the same tossup style as 1st quarter (those 1-2 liners) that have scoring of +5 correct, -5 incorrect even after question is finished, and question goes dead after 1 incorrect response.

The proposed bracket format that I had put last post has the benefit of not eliminating teams with 1 loss at any time, quickly grouping teams of similar skill, while it has the drawback of eliminating half the field from championship contention (potentially at 2-1 in prelims and losing a half-game) ...

I've attached an xls with a bracket format that would get to a finals in a minimum of 9 rounds (assuming no tiebreakers), or 11 rounds maximum with tiebreakers at each stage. More comments later.

You won't be guaranteed a 5-0, 4-1, 3-2 etc. in each bracket. Instead, I would do 4 brackets of 6 (5 rounds), then 3 brackets of 8 (2-2-2 from each prelim) with the carryover game from the original RR (6 more rounds), followed by finals if necessary (13 rounds total). We'll probably use October 1st as TWAIN now that UCSD is taking the 8th... Not sure what else UCLA will host, but probably 1 HS tournament per quarter.
