Re: Some thoughts on the distribution and regular difficulty

I'm actually really confused as to why you single out World Lit as a category that can't be written at 1/1. A lot of high schoolers take foreign language classes (though French- and German-language works, for the most part, fall under European), and part of those classes is reading works by authors...

Re: Some thoughts on the distribution and regular difficulty

I'd say almost zero lit crit; if you really want to, you can use, say, T.S. Eliot's essays as a lead-in or something, but it just seems very unnecessary, especially since it falls squarely in the "things people know because they come up in college" category. Or maybe some people have an interest in...

Re: PACE Certification Review of Questions

I think that what William's saying is that overall an EM bonus is an "easy" bonus, an EH bonus is a "medium" bonus, and a MH bonus is a "hard" bonus--simply because an average team will score the most points on the first and the fewest on the last. I think this is good analysis and probably quite a...

Again, even if you say all math comp should've been removed and all bonuses should have had 3 parts, you are still not talking about the majority of the tournament using "bad" questions. Teams answered bonuses after every tossup, so in fact the use of only 2 parts affected almost half of all questi...

Re: PACE Certification Review of Questions

Insinuating that the GATA Varsity questions were not "good" and giving placement results without providing some more stats could be a little misleading as those teams at GATA Varsity finished with similar records and PPG, which did, in fact, translate to similar records and PPG at the HSNCT. Lots of "ACF format" sets don't use the ACF distribution, and there is no standard mACF distribution, so I see nothing wrong with the nomenclature. Middle school quizbowl simply cannot use even the high school distribution, or it will by default be too hard. Everything makes a whole lot more sense ...

Is there a reason why your "ACF Format Sets" do not, in fact, use the (m)ACF distribution? There seems to be no distribution for Philosophy or Social Science, and 2/2 General Knowledge combined with 1/1 Current Events seems a bit much. 1/1 Math seems a lot, too.
