Re: Global Announcement: ACF Fall 2008, 11/8

Any update on whether or not the mirror at UTK will work out? All the current sites are about equidistantly 5-6 hours away from us, but Knoxville's an hour or so closer and we've never been to a tournament there before.

Re: FEUERBACH Mirror at South Carolina on October 4

Hmm it's 4.5 hours to Tallahassee (no packet submission) or 2 hours to Columbia (packet required) on the same date. We'll see who on our team wants to write and get back to y'all with exactly how many teams we might send, but we're definitely interested.

Re: Possible tournament at Clemson?

Our goal this year is 7 teams at one tournament, so this one might be our best chance logistics-wise. However, we did mirror TIT last year and would probably like to bid for ACF winter this year (since it comes at a good hosting time for us), so perhaps another tournament might work out better, espe...

Re: Science Study Sources...

Biology isn't too hard to learn actually; I'd recommend starting with all the cellular organelles and then expanding to stages of mitosis, photosynthesis, etc. Sparknotes has a pretty good biology site: http://www.sparknotes.com/biology/ . I would recommend you first read through the ACF Fall TUs on...

Re: Announcement: UGA Fall Tournament 9/20

Yeah go ahead and put this down as officially changing to Oct. 25th. We'll be sending out email invites shortly once school gets started up next week.

Re: Energy Costs and Quizbowl

High School teams who are good enough to qualify for a national tournament are probably going to find a way to get the money to go. I'm concerned about teams who usually finish in the bottom half of the tournament but also make up a good part of the attendance at tournaments. If the teams themselves...

Energy Costs and Quizbowl

Gas is $4+ a gallon. School systems everywhere are cutting back on frivolous funding. Costs to heat/cool school buildings are rising with some school districts considering cutting a day off the school schedule. Things don't look like they're going to improve anytime soon. So, what's quizbowl going t...

Re: Announcement: UGA Fall Tournament 9/20

Nothing confirmed yet, but it's looking like it might be Oct. 25th instead. Working within the confines of the UGA football schedule, we were originally concerned about some other conflicts on that date but those didn't turn out so unless there's another conflict (let us know if there is) Oct 25th o...

Re: buzzer hesitancy/reluctance/cowardice(?)

I think there are three separate, though related times when buzzer hesitancy issues come up. The first, which seems to be the dominant topic of this thread, involves new players. They may know a few things, but they really don't know the canon and can get intimidated by the prospect of negs or merel...

Re: Starting a College Team

Definitely take a look at what your school's policies for student organizations are. There's a decent bit of paperwork to go through and sometimes you have to have a certain number of people interested in order to register it. Finances: One of the things you'll need to figure out early on is the fin...

Re: Great News! CBI "Susp"Ends!

The big difference between CBI and ACF is that if you want to do reasonably well at ACF you need to prepare at least somewhat- CBI on the other hand allowed random reasonably intelligent people to sit down and feel really smart. Since the ACF canon isn't that big, it's not too hard to improve at it,...

Re: Great News! CBI "Susp"Ends!

Well what does the ACUI want? Solid academic competition? Pleasing as many universities as possible? Or just resolving this mess quickly? I'd be very curious to know what their motivation was behind sponsoring academic bowl stuff was in the first place and to what extent they supported CBI financial...

Re: Georgia 2008-2009

Brookwood/Chatt/Walton, take your pick. Their top-3 dominance in state will likely continue, but the teams with the best shot at breaking the triumvirate are probably Alpharetta and Centennial, with Norcross and Central Gwinnett as dark horses depending on who they have coming up. And what about the...
