Re: Rules on Bonus Ordering

Aside from the fact that the bonus on Ike (my namesake) wasn't read because of this to me, I agree with everyone else. There's no need to frameshift the bonus set with the tossups, that only causes for more confusion I think. I know moderators do it in their own way differently, but laying this out ...

Re: EFT Discussion

While I enjoyed the set, there were a few things I wanted to address. I don't see why when we are writing common link tossups we dont put what they are asking for first. I buzzed off of Nox in dragon tossup and said Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time and was unable to figure out what the prompt wante...

Re: Quizbowl v. Trivia

It has nothing to do with the ridiculous "if we were playing ACF in 1608 you'd call Shakespeare trash!!!!" My point is, you can make this argument as much as you want, and even if you can make it hold some merit, but its quite fruitless because its a retroactive argument that in no way can be used ...

Alright, so the quizbowl community has essentially sided with Harold Bloom when it comes to the idea of a canon... I disagree. Most prominently, none of us are being pompous like he is when we define the canon: and in all honesty the canon is very natural, and we add caesurae to the right places. T...

Re: Quizbowl v. Trivia

Off hand, I know last year at the HSNCT they ran tossups on Rumplestiltzkin, Merlin, Nostradamus, His Dark Materials, and bonuses on James Bond novels, and Harry Potter. With the exception of Nostradamus, I can bet those all count toward literature. If I ever sit through and review all the HSNCT's a...

When I say Trash, i mean in it in a QB sense and askability. Ted is perfectly right about the it being insanity that a literary effort be demerited because of movie adaptations. Pardon if I did not specify that exactly. I think the standard to decide if something falls into literature is to evaluate...

I've yet been able to power any tossups on literature based on any movie adaptations I've seen. My example was meant to evoke something so commonplace in our lives, ie LOTR and Harry Potter, that its bizarre calling it literature. I'm not saying literature is esoteric, but seriously, many more Ameri...

To directly answer this thread with a terse answer: no. Ike, this whole thing is absurd. At the same time, I somewhat question the definition of the dead zone as starting with tossup 10; after all, if it were restricted to 11 to 14, we would find only four fine arts in the dead zone (versus an expected 6.15). What is the appropriate definition of the dead zone? It was completely arbitr...

NAQT and the Dead Zone (ETC moved from Nationals)

I was listening to some podcasts of the HSNCT for this year and noticed how tossups on Titian and oratorios went dead because the timer went out.
