Re: 2009 ICT discussion

As far as the hotel situation went, for the actual game play I think things went quite well--the rooms for each pool were in the same wing, the sound insulation in rooms was good, the rooms were comfortable. For everything else, it was bit of a mess. Obviously I think the food thing was the number o...

Re: 2009 ICT discussion

The biggest problem I had with the set was the tiebreaker packet (Packet 8's) balance between the first and second half. There were five flat-out trash questions (three toss-ups, two bonuses) in the first 13 toss-ups/bonuses, and the two bonuses were, I think, in the first ten or eleven questions. I...

Re: Proposed trash/TRASH guidelines

Also, 1/1 Broadway would be pure insanity. I just don't believe there's enough noteworthy answer space to lead to those questions being converted. I think the same issue would happen that seems to happen with trash list; yeah, a lot of people buy those books, but how many of them play quiz bowl? Th...

Re: Proposed trash/TRASH guidelines

As for the sports distribution I think it's clear that football, basketball, and baseball are the big three, with football is clearly ahead of the other two. Unfortunately, the fact that college football and basketball are big deals while college baseball is very hard to ask about make it tough to b...

Re: Proposed trash/TRASH guidelines

The one trash tournament I've attended this year was Trashmasters at UTC, where my team (all college students) got soundly whipped by all but one of the other teams there. The one team we beat? The one other team of college students. My teammates (none of whom had been to a single trash tournament b...

Chris, if you're interested and we can find two more people, I'll team up with you. As I said, I can't promise any ability to play well, but I can certainly write a few extra questions since you said you'd only be able to write a couple.

Wait, there were only 6 games run? Teams arriving late/canceling at the last minute/leaving early, a bad moderator (for the record, had it been by choice, that moderator would not have read a single round), a fire alarm in the food court during lunch, and various other difficulties to be expected f...

This is geared more toward running high school tournaments, but it could just as well apply to college/open tournaments. If you'd like to skip the background reading and move straight to giving your opinion, just read the two questions at the end of the post. We hosted a high school tournament yeste...

I'm definitely interested in playing this, although I would probably (read: assuredly) suck rather horribly. But I could certainly write six toss-ups for a team in search of a fourth player.

Field update:

Sulphur (3 teams)
Jesuit (3)
St. Thomas More (2)
Lafayette

We are still in need of one more buzzer system; if any of the teams attending or anyone in the New Orleans area has one, please let us know.

Off the bat, thought I tried to insert easy parts into all of those categories (Pahmuk had a question on castles, Ike's exciting Gosannen war question was converted to a bonus asking for Heian, and I think most non-classical myths had things like Huitzilapochtli or Tlaloc or Izanagi). Do these thin...

In comparison, I just want to point out that at MSU's site, the bonus conversion for TIT was actually slightly higher than it was for SCT DI (8.62 for TIT vs. 8.43 or so for SCT). SCT's DI at MSU featured a one-man ULL team and a two-man Alabama B. None of the teams had an identical roster between ...

My reaction, and what I got from the other teams at the MSU mirror, was that the bonus parts were too hard. It's certainly true that the field at that mirror wasn't the strongest, but I felt like way too many bonuses were going for zero. Part of this was because almost every team lacked a true scien...

Religion/myth: I'd argue that 1/1 for each undervalues religion, if we distinguish between the two by defining "religion" as "stuff that is widely believed and practiced today" and "mythology" as "stuff that isn't." My guess is that the average packet probably has one question on classical (Greco-Ro...

I may have more to say here later (and I'm sure others will, too) but one quick idea: when you ask people to send you questions (for a packet you're collaborating on) do you just...ask them to send you questions? question writing

At Tulane we're not really a new team, but one thing that we haven't done in the past is write questions, and I'm trying to change that. Adding to the fact that we haven't written questions before is the fact that we're also a very young team for the most part. Last year we had maybe 7-10 people who...

Best teams in your state?

It's pretty hard to rank teams outside of your area, since often there's no more than a tournament or two and hearsay to judge them on. But often times you play the teams in your city or state multiple times over the course of a year. So who would you rank as the best teams in your state? I figure i...
