Re: Cross-Post: NAQT Timing Discussion

For what it's worth, in summer 2019 I proposed changing to 3/3/5. Only one member other than me supported the proposal, and they did so very lukewarmly by my reading. Quite a number of members explicitly opposed it. Appreciate this info, Jonah! That being said, I think it's worth thinking more crit...

Cross-Post: NAQT Timing Discussion

I posted this in the SCT D1 general discussion forum. Mike Cheyne helpfully suggested that I make it public, since it doesn't spoil set content but touches on an important issue. I very much appreciate the fact that NAQT continues to appeal to a broad range of people by including general knowledge, ...

Re: ICT Side Events

Should we finally consider using the five rounds of 20-tossup packets of film questions by former Valencia player Sean Platzer? I reckon that would only take 90 minutes or so if run as a shootout, a little longer with duo teams or something. Whatever! It's done and ready if people think that would ...

I think it would have been better to toss up martyrs as "these people" - with the caveat that this can definitely lead to ambiguity, but I think noting the fact that not all martyrs are saints or vice versa makes that work out fine, and I'm sure there's ways you can word it to be specific - especial...

Re: 2020 ACF Regionals: Specific Questions and Errata

Eh, the history seemed tough but mostly in line with the rest of the set - the hard parts were consistently challenging, but I felt they were generally pretty similar in difficulty and weren't any sort of "roller coaster." Most of them also tested worthwhile things in a way that was engaging to list...

Re: 2020 ACF Regionals: Specific Questions and Errata

A few of the history bonus middle parts seemed on the hard side, particularly Francisco de Miranda and the Hongwu Emperor. Miranda was a hard part at 2016 ICT! Miranda is a bit soft for a hard part at Regionals (let alone ICT) but I would definitely agree he's too hard for a middle at this level. I...

Re: 2020 ACF Regionals: Specific Questions and Errata

I think the question on the "oxide" anion was rather confusing, given that the majority of the question was on the formation and usage of silica, a covalent compound. Agreed with Jacob on the confusion about calling bebop a "genre" - I think "style" is a better referent there. While there was in general a commendably thorough effort made to add many prompts to answerlines, there were a few issues that fell through: In the bonus part on the "Hundred World Eulogy,"...

I think Ophir, Andrew, and Jonathan make persuasive arguments for the community value of packet submission - when you see that a packet is "Michigan A" then you know the Michigan team contributed to the packet and that helps institutionalize things in a way that's difficult to put a value on.
