Re: A Different Way to Quantify Buzzing
This is a total shot in the dark, but here's my guess. With this information, an team of relatively unknown ability (UCF for example) would know that they, if they want any chance of winning, really need to get aggressive on the buzzers to beat UVA, but against Chicago C, we could probably sit back ...

Re: On Being a Fourth Scorer
This is a good read. I got awfully frustrated at a few tournaments last year (3 powers, 3 tossups, 2 negs) before lunch. But at SCT, I had two first line powers that kept us competitive against Alabama and we beat South Carolina last year at ACF regionals when I got the last tossup. I know no one wa...

Re: NAQT Security Discussion
Out of curiosity, what were the warning signs about Andy that made people suspicious in the first place? As his teammate on one of the ICT teams, I hadn't the faintest idea that he was cheating, but of course by that point I was already mostly out of the quiz bowl loop. I've never seen Andy play, w...

Hey, Well-written social science questions that aren't on dusty tomes from the Devonian period are pretty awesome. The problem is, they're a real pain in the ass to write (especially compared to, say, literature, history, or myth) and a lot of people don't seem to like playing them for one reason o...

Re: autobid thread split
Jake, I'm not faulting anyone who did that. I'd have jumped on the chance to save money and time. Just, when we made the bid, I didn't think that that would happen. That was more me not thinking it through than anything else. And for the record, the UCF quiz bowl operating budget is $1500 this whole...

Would programs who qualified teams via autobid (Minnesota, Buffalo, Central Florida, Truman State, Texas A&M, Delaware, McMaster, Ohio State) have hosted SCT without that opportunity? I'm not Bradley, but I don't believe Central Florida would have bid to host without an autobid in place. In hindsig...

Central Florida - Did any of these people go to Valencia? Alas, no. Sam's right. There's a mistake I'm never going to make again. I thought that since money is very tight, and printing money is coming directly out of my pocket. I shouldn't spent another $20 on packets we probably won't ever use. Now I know better, and I won't do that again.

Re: NAQT region 6 SCT announcement.
So, the results. We had a combined field of 6 DII teams and 1 DI team. We expected to have 8 and printed off enough packets for 8. A tournament of 7 means a double round robin. This caught us off guard, we couldn't get the packets in time, so we played it like UF B forfeited every round. UCF A was t...

Apparently this SCT site is going to have a huge number of teams. Yep. I suppose Orlando is out of the way for several people in the south east. Difficulty/scheduling question
UCF wants to house-write a tournament next year, perhaps. The big, first question is what difficulty. The first thought is that something HSNCT level, like a warmup, in the november-january would be fun. Then people started questioning the ability to get high school teams good enough to field HSNCT ...

Our team 10'd that name-change bonus (we got Boof Bonser but not the other two) but it wasn't a very good question, I don't think -- there were way less obscure parts that could have been asked instead of a middleweight boxer who retired well before most DII players were born, and a mediocre basket...
