Re: Question Specific Discussion

Seeing as there is going to be another mirror, I suppose I should point out the following repeats or repeat-like-substances (all packet numbers refer to the order in which they were read at Harvard): Yeats twice in packet 2; Buffalo Bill in packets 1 and 2; I have "Brubeck repeat" written down for ...

Re: A serious discussion of ACF packet submission

Yeahno, if ACF Fall is an easy tournament and ACF Winter is a regular tournament, it makes no sense to have teams submit one packet to cover both. (Also, teams play really different lineups at easy tournaments. Think of Hypothetical College P, who might not play their elite player "Schmeric Schmukh...

Re: A serious discussion of ACF packet submission

The first packet deadline is already the first week of September; if you move the first fall any earlier in order to put the second fall in late November you are moving the packet deadlines up so that the packets will start being due before anyone is even on campus yet. Why is this an issue? Teams ...

Re: A serious discussion of ACF packet submission

On half-packets: I think that changing the requirement to half-packets across the board is a bad idea. Less experienced players generally want to write questions that are the easiest for them to write, i.e. questions for categories in which they have the most knowledge or where it is not too hard t...

What constituted the "other" category in this tournament? I recall seeing that cheese bonus (which was stupidly easy) and the chess bonus (which was also pretty easy). I don't think those two bonuses were incredibly easy for everyone. The first part of the cheese bonus asked you to name the type of...

I'd like to see "how to attract and retain club members" (as I mentioned in the other thread) and "how to properly write a lead-in," as well as more niche topics like "how to select relevant visual clues for paintings" or "how to select relevant audio clues for music." I realize some of these things...

Deep Play - Should be at least prompted on Notes from a Balinese Cockfight. It's called that just as often as it's called Deep Play in the academic literature. Re: General Discussion

Speaking as a player on a lower-tier team, I was a bit disappointed at first in the difficulty. It was advertised as Penn-ance level difficulty (and that's what I told my teammates), but I think it overshot that. I also told my teammates this, and was similarly dismayed to find it was harder than P...

I really liked that 1980 Presidential Debates question, I can't believe I missed power for that. The liquid-liquid extraction bonus was really hard in comparison to this tournament's average and target. Yeah, in this packet, the easy parts on science went "cancer," "extraction," "Grand Canyon" (which isn't really science knowledge) and "atomic nuclei," with straightforward descriptions. Extrac...

Re: Protests: What are protests for? What should the rule be?

I think we need to get more specific about when a protest can be rejected because "the prior clues rule out the answer," whether that's a certain number of lines/clues or whatever. It seems to me that in practice, how that argument is deployed is a function of how the given answer relates to the cl...

Teams would have to keep in mind that factual errors could be present in unedited packets. It might be a good idea to put a huge warning label at the top of each unedited packet that reads "some questions may be factually incorrect."

I was really happy to see the Mariel boatlift get tossed up, because it is an important event in the history of Cuba-U.S. relations. On the whole, I was relatively pleased with the chemistry in this set. I'll point to linear/see-saw/Jahn-Teller effect and vapor pressure/Raoult's law/Marg...

I enjoyed this set. I have no specific points to raise, but I wonder if others were as thrown off by the use of "this reaction" in a tossup on "hydrogenation" and a bonus part on "SN2" as I was? It looks like wikipedia describes both in passing as singular, codified reactions, but I am unconvinced ...

Down in Texas, the only tossup we saw go dead was the tossup on steradians, during the final between Rice A and A&M A. Dunno if that was the right difficulty or not, but it didn't seem like it.
