Re: Improving as a geography player?

Similar to what others have said, if you are looking for something more interesting to read, I found reading all the descriptions for World Heritage sites on the UNESCO website to be really interesting, and I have gotten a decent amount of points through it.

Re: Improving as a geography player?

I've always poured over atlases and maps, but there are probably more efficient and interesting ways. Actually, I would say atlases are the best way to prepare. Using them with wikipedia should work well to get all the cultural stuff and more obscure physical features that are not present in atlase...

Re: Studying for College History, Book recommendations?

While the Cartoon History books are pretty great, they don't give enough of a comprehensive overview of world history. For that, I would recommend World Civilizations by Philip J. Adler for world history and The American Pageant for USH. The Encyclopedia of World History by Stearns is also another g...

Re: US Geography Olympiad Nationals Discussion Thread

I think having an all quiz bowl would definitely be more fun, but I see two main issues with this. 1. There is no buzzer related competition at iGeo, so USGO would not really be selecting the 4 people that have the highest potential of success there. 2. It would be completely pointless to have the r...

Re: NHBB Nationals Discussion Thread

There was an issue in the packets in the Afternoon bracket. In one of our matches, one question literally just had "For ten points" as the entire question, according to our reader. He promptly followed the proper protocol and just read the replacement question at the end of the match. In the next ro...

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?

I have another question. What is the best place to start when studying lit? Should I be going down the frequency list or looking up what I hear in tournaments/practice?

Thanks

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?

Would Sparknotes really be sufficient for HSNCT level lit? For some books, even just Wikipedia is sufficient; sometimes important characters come up as the first clue ( The Cherry Orchard and À la recherche du temps perdu last year...). So for the top 50 or so most frequent books, a deeper knowledg...

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?

Yeah, I agree, but what are the best detailed summaries available? If wikipedia is not good, then what is the best approach? I have the Benet's Readers Encyclopedia, but its summaries also seem quite skimpy.

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?

One area on which I am confused is how to study efficiently. Is it better to read the book, or just memorize a summary? I feel that reading an entire book solely for quizbowl would be really inefficient, but that memorizing summaries would fail at the highest level.
